Ulfric's a dick, yes, but I still admire him.
Mostly for his sake, I could never join the Empire; even in spite of the dumb and irritating things that the Stormcloaks do.

Lol...the empire has become the Thalmor's bitch sure they stand a better chance on paper but they no longer have the balls to stand up to them.

I personally don't understand why so many people hate Ulfric, I mean, with Whiterun, if you pay atention on the dialog, Ulfric don't want to fight for the city, he is actually reluctant first fearing an battle there could cause too much harm, but at the same time he can't just let the empire take it over, then when the stupid Jarl refuse his offer to side with him, I gladly went there to fight for the city. Even if Ulfric have his reasons for starting an rebelion, at least he is fighting for his land to be free, I personally think that there is nothing more honorable then fight for your own freedom. And I don't find him too pretentious, he is just very serious in whatever he does. But you totally got right the part about him being charismatic, his speech when you go to his palace the first time is totally epic.

Any would-be king can make his own ambition sound like a just and glorious cause, to sucker other people into killing and dying for them. I don't like the Empire or their behead-happy ways, but I don't trust Ulfric one bit.
[SPOILER!]
And I still can't forget the dossier I retrieved from the Thalmor embassy during the main quest that lists Ulfric as an "asset".
Just like in real life, things are not as they seem with these "liberation struggles". There is always a bigger picture, and hidden powers at play behind the scenes.

Same goes for the empire, they call their cause just because they give the excuse that what they are doing is the only chance to stop the Thalmor, when deep down they are just sacrificing other people land to save themselfs. Remember when they did the same thing to Hammerfell, the redguards rebeled and defeated the Thalmor, so I personally don't think the Empire is all that important to put an end to the war with the elfs.
And remember, the Thalmor wanted to use Ulfric as an way to prolong the civil war for years and weaken the empire, however the dragonborn can make this years be shortened into weeks, wich ultimatelly foils the plan of the Thalmor. So I know both the empire and the stormcloacks have their own share of faults, but at least I think that the nords have what it takes to fight against the elfs, unlike the empire that gave up and kneel down to them.

only thing that urks me about supporting the stormcloaks, other than that dossier, is the fact that you effectively cut High Rock off from cyrodiil leaving them open for an attack via sea, I don't think ulfric will lift a finger to help the bretons but the empire would

[Spoilers ahead!] I went to Windhelm to join the Stormcloaks, and was slightly put off by their prejudiced attitude towards the Dark Elves, apparently with Ulfric's support.
Still, I went ahead and joined up - ignoring the fact that Ulfric clearly had an ego to match Alduin's - until he gave me his axe and forced an ultimatum on the Jarl of Whiterun. Who had just made me his Thane.
Then that idiot bizarrely chose to side with the Empire, so I, his new Thane AND a Stormcloak, had to carry the message back to Ulfric that would cause Whiterun to be attacked and the Jarl overthrown, and join in the attack myself.
I couldn't bring myself to do it so I ran off with the axe, joined the Dark Brotherhood, and assassinated the Emperor instead. Balls to Ulfric, I fight the Empire in my own way.

I hated that too! You JUST get named a Thane, and then you have to freakin attack the city? After that, being named Thane again by any other Jarl just seems hollow. Like...bad room service or something. Just...just bad, man.

Oh I agree completely about the Companions.
I actually went ahead and carried out the attack on Whiterun, and while the consequences weren't so bad as I imagined, it's still my character's home city and I couldn't stand seeing it half destroyed, so I loaded an earler save and ran off with Ulfric's axe again. And he can't do anything about it because I'm now the Listener and could assassinate him whenever I felt like it. Mwahahahaha! Serves him right. The Night Mother is the only true power in Skyrim!

I sided with the Stormcloaks because I couldn't stand a bunch of weak cowards who bend over for the Thalmor and willingly spit on their own culture.
