Description
Pyrmont Bridge
is one of the world's oldest surviving electrically operated swing bridges and is considered an engineering and technological marvel of its time. The bridge was designed by Percy Allan, a prominent Sydney architect and engineer, and was built by the New South Wales Government Railway in 1902. The bridge was originally built to replace an earlier timber drawbridge that had become too narrow for the increasing traffic on Darling Harbour. The bridge's swing span is supported by a massive steel pivot, which weighs around 1,200 tonnes and is capable of rotating the span in just 60 seconds.
