Christchurch, New Zealand. My Home town. A broken city. Two major quakes and 10,000 aftershocks later. Eastern suburbs gone. Central city destroyed. Western suburbs becoming the new life-line.
I went back to the old Cathedral that we all used to consider the defining image of our city. I took this photo. It had a tall spire once. There was nothing positive for me in seeing it with my own eyes.
For some reason turning that picture into an 'Obama Hope' parody seemed to make sense to me then. I guess that's where my mind was at. You could say that this image is inspirational and literally full of hope, and yes it is. But you could also say that I was feeling ironic...that what I saw was the end of hope...the futility of it all...that would also be true...I think I was feeling both...perhaps I still do.
