Description Needle-felted TFA Ultra Magnus.

I started working on him back in March, if you can believe it - eh, motivated much? I must give credit to ~Sinceredir for allowing me to use her [3D Magnus] for reference. Also for poking me every so often to complete him. Thanks hun!

As usual, he's made of merino wool and is posable. The hammer is about 11 inches tall and Ultra Magnus is about 9.5 inches tall (which, I've discovered, is my absolute limit on size - my felting needles are only so long. I know that other felters can make huge things. Not me! XD

In conclusion: Stripey Thighs

Really great work, as per usual The shapes are all really accurate and everything is in the right place. Stripey thighs... A lot of the details are really noticable, like the small blue stripes on the back and the tiny light blue stripes on the Hammer. wonderful work!

Thanks very much, glad you like him. One of the great things about the TFA Transformers are all these fantastic little details *coughstripescough* that are such a blast for me to try to recreate out of wool.

Same as me, I love all the little details that go into the art process, whether it's the glow of the optics, tiny scratches and nicks in the armor, or the right smile. It's almost like an adventure creating things, and I think that's why I enjoy it so much. Art is so satisfying.

Forgive me for starting the terribly obvious, but this is amazing.

I can not imagine anything more difficult to make out of a medium like felt than a Transformer, especially those with the wonky, stylized lines that define TFA.

So, I offer you my props, GlassCamel. They are well-deserved!

Thank you very much!

Though to be honest, it isn't really difficult so much as time-consuming. XD

This is REALLY really good, at first I thought it was the leader class action figure. That's how good it looks.

Say... are you open to commissions?

GlassCamel In reply to Nagi-Oki [2010-01-01 21:54:56 +0000 UTC]

heh, Ultra Magnus has a really excellent toy already. I'm not sure what I was thinking making a needle-felted version.

I do take on commissions occasionally. Feel free to note me if you're curious.

GlassCamel In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2009-12-15 04:50:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

He's actually not felted onto an armature. You can see how they start out [here] Every piece is threaded together with wire for posability and string for tension. I only use armatures for animals, I'm not sure why I never made robots the same way...

SilverGryphon8 In reply to GlassCamel [2009-12-15 05:21:12 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's better. Interesting method of putting them together piecemeal like that- I always build mine up following muscle groud. I have to be careful around the joints to not put too much wool or else they won't be able to flex.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GlassCamel In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2009-12-16 19:53:00 +0000 UTC]

It is strange, I know. I've never taken an art class in my life so I kinda have to muddle through and make it up as I go along. It works well enough for robots, though I don't think I'd be able to attempt a human.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverGryphon8 In reply to GlassCamel [2009-12-16 23:20:57 +0000 UTC]

Lots of anatomy books help. But the way you break the character down into manageable bits would serve you well with a human. Most of your creations DO follow the 'one torso two arms two legs one head' bipedal humanoid design. And you have enough detail that I think you'd do a decent job with a face once you taught yourself the proportions.

GlassCamel In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2009-12-17 01:02:08 +0000 UTC]

Faces, yup. Too intimidated to attempt it - fortunately I haven't wanted to make anyone that badly yet. *feels thankful to be a robot fan*
