Description A nekkid Jazz and Bumblebee interrupt a conversation...

No, really, I had a point for this. A couple of months ago I noticed this bag of Poly-fil in one of my closets. Guess what! It felts great! But then I end up with these ...pre-armored guys that crack me up. When I strung Bee and Jazz together today to check for sizes (you can see the wire there) Optimus, Starscream and TFA!Bee all sort of looked appalled.
I'm pretty sure Jazz was the instigator here Run, Bee, Run!

I will scrap this as soon as I come to my senses

Just me and the bots goofing off!

Posability and balance were what I wanted when I first started making these guys. Some have better balance than others though...

So what was your very first needle felting project? Did it take you a long time to start making those awesome little Transformers?

GlassCamel In reply to Screamer21 [2010-04-06 04:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Let's see, I've been needle felting since 2006. My first project was a awfulawfulawful llama.
After that I made rather sub-par squirrels and bunnies and things for friends and office-mates.
My first Transformer was Rumble [link] in 2008 and I've been hooked on robots ever since.

To be completely honest, I wasn't at all good at making the more common needle-felted things (dogs, dragons, teddy bears). I probably wouldn't be felting today if I hadn't discovered a real joy in making robots!

A ha! So you practiced quite a bit beforehand. Rumble looks great to me! Him being fuzzy just makes him more lovable, lol.

I was able to get a needle felting kit off Ebay. Now all I need is the foam and I'll be practicing. Thanks so much for the response, tips, and intro to needle felting!

Bravo! I'm so glad you're going to start felting!

If I've learned anything that I can pass on it would be: make whatever you're most passionate about - forcing yourself to make what everyone else does won't get you anywhere.

Happy felting! And I'll be watching for your stuff!

Cool! I just made a little flower for my first project and a heart too! It's FUN!

I think I might try to use that poly-fil that you also tried. I found a stash of it hidden in my closet!

GlassCamel In reply to Screamer21 [2010-04-10 22:15:36 +0000 UTC]

It's positively addictive!

Poly-fil is great for large shapes you can also use a coarse-ish wool like llama. They're much cheaper than fine, dyed wools!

Screamer21 In reply to GlassCamel [2010-04-11 02:27:51 +0000 UTC]

Whoa! They have llama wool too??? Incredible!

Have you ever heard of Ashford's Corridale Wool or Alpaca Suri Roving? The Corridale wool is the type I got in my kit from Ebay. I think it's pretty nice.

Any types that you recommend?

Also, there are some pretty good sellers on Ebay. They give you A TON of wool for very reasonable prices.

The lady I bought wool from charged about $18 bucks for 3 needles and 4 and 1/2 ounces of wool in 14 colors! If you like, I can give you the address of her store so you can check it out!

Thanks for the advice, too. It's reallly going to help!

GlassCamel In reply to Screamer21 [2010-04-11 04:42:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Yes!

And camel and buffalo and yak and alpaca and goat and rabbit and anything with fur really!
There are also lots of synthetic fibers and plant fibers out there as well as silk! The Yarn Tree has a lot of information on different fibre types ([link] )

Corriedale seems to be the wool of choice for most needle-felters - it felts up fast and easy and is available ready-dyed in lots and lots of colors. I personally prefer Merino wool, though it takes longer to get felted because I tend to do things the hard way... *sigh* The more exotic fibers (like Suri or Cashmere or Guanaco) can get pretty expensive, and I generally don't have a need for them.

These days I get my supplies from sellers on Etsy.com . You can find (or have made!) whatever you might like and wool will often come from someone's own sheep!

I'm glad that you got a reasonably-priced kit! Sounds good!

Oh dear. Sorry 'bout the wall o' text! Can ya tell I like talking about felting? XD

Screamer21 In reply to GlassCamel [2010-04-11 08:35:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, that website is VERY helpful, thanks so much. I had no idea there were so many types of furs and fibers!

That's awesome! I wish I had sheep. I'd have an endless supply of wool and a fuzzy pet! I'll check out Etsy, though. Sounds neat!

LOL, don't worry about the super long text , lol. I'm the one who started it because of my thousands of questions!

I don't blame you! Felting is G-R-E-A-T! Thanks again for the help.
