Years ago, people used to whittle on bits of wood..many people, but you don't see it now

This might have been done with a chain saw. That is popular over here. Very noisy and dangerous.

I use to do it when I was a kid trying to copy some adults I saw but my whittling never amounted to anything other than a pile of wood chips and an ever decreasing piece of wood in my hand that never ended up looking like anything at all

I was too but I was whittling a stick to cook marshmallows when I was in Girl Scouts and still managed to cut myself. Yes, I had to get stitches. Can you imagine what I would do with a chain saw?
