Hmm, Well if something isn't right I'd say the first thing I noticed is his face seems kinda small in relation to the rest of his head, there seems to be more forehead and top-head than what would be expected. And both his eyes are slanting the same way inspite of the fact perspective on a tilted head like that would make them different (perhaps the closer one rotated anti-clockwise a bit 
I do like the idea though, I think I've seen Cloud with a wolf a few times but I can't remember seeing Squall with his signature animal yet

I suppose if you want thick, long backcombed hair you could just make the gaps between one lock of hair and the next go deeper, which suggest the head itself dosn't start too soon beneath the hair, but then it'll probably start looking more anime-like
I hate drawing semi-realism faces too, I never am happy with any of mine either
