Description
I bought new color pencil set today and wanted to test how they work. Also, I wrote something in English again for DracoStryx's Monthly Art challenge. I tried my best and I hope it's enough. At least I liked both the picture (Romun looks so fluffy daw) and story.
For some reason I feel this arpg group is relaxing and even therapeutic in a way. Admins and mods are great and the community doesn't fight (at least I have never seen a fight myself).
I would be very glad to get more involved, by interacting with other players and exchanging some art that has a good story behind it. I'd like Aren to meet other riders/caretakers and their stryxes and let those encounters shape her. I try to write a good story with development, I don't want to just get AP and breed stryxes. The only thing that prevents me from talking to others is that I am very shy on the interner and the fear that something would go wrong (for example, the other person stops answering my notes, arguments, misunderstandings etc.).
- Derwent's Studio Fine Color Pencils (a pack of 36 pencils)
- A cheap sketchbook, apparently these pencils would need paper that's not so soft.

Romun had learned that I was pleased when he brought me stuff. So now he brought me all the stuff he could find. Pens, letters, my astrolabe, all kinds of things. Ironically, the ink bottle I had ordered a month ago kept appearing beside my feet and once I nearly had knocked it over. Romun was adorable when he did that, but sometimes... There should be at least some kind of a line that wouldn't get crossed. I leaned against grass and let out a tired sigh. The setting sun was getting colder as it hid between the tree-spotted mountains far away.
There was too much interesting going on anyway. Just yesterday I had received an interesting letter from the nearest town. It was from Mallarch, a member of The Blinkers. They were astronomers, sky-enthusiasts like me or even mages...
I could imagine Mallarch's fierce exitement as he wrote about what he had found: A new star, slightly blue in colour. Rising from the northeast every two months and appearing every night for five days before fading into a magical slumber. A thrill glowing in my limbs made it almost impossible to relax.
”Romun, come here little buddy.”
With now a bit stronger 'skree', Romun jogged to me. His talons had grown and it was only a matter of time when they would give our floor a nice little makeover.
Romun cooed, waiting for a new command. He was really sweet. Those big eyes and fluffy feathers... I couldn't resist the urge to rub his neck. His eyes melted into two lines filled with pleasure.
”Tsrrrr....”
”You're so silly, Romun”, I giggled as a chilly breeze played with my ponytail blowing it in my stryx's face. The stryx's pleasure faded fast and for a moment the breeze's monotone melody had to compete against displeased skreeking and flapping.
Romun looked at me, as if he was asking for an apology or accusing me of an attempt to blind him. I did say sorry, by rubbing him even more. There were no hard feelings after that. Romun found a comfortable, warm place by my side and wrapped himself up into a soft featherball.
I couldn't have been happier. Romun had a heart so big it would easily devour me one day. I wondered if it would be like that when he got big... By Galyx, he was really going to take up more space soon. I would have to have a talk with my father about it, how fast was he going to grow?
A sudden idea crossed my mind. I glanced at Romun's wings. Warm rays of sunlight made his feathers look like embers.
”Buddy, it's hard to believe you'll be a big dragon someday... But anyhow”, I let a short break mold my thoughts, ”I'd be happier than ever if you would take me to the sky when you're big enough. Flying, swiping that wide horizon with your wings... There's so much to see and I'd love to get closer to that beauty one day.”
Of course, Romun had no idea what I had just said but succeeded in picking my longing tone from the flood of words. His head tilted and beak opened a little. A little purring ”tsrr” comforted me. Strangely enough, he didn't speak a word but I felt at ease with him. A warm feeling climbed up my chest.
I enfolded my arms around my stryx and lifted it up with me. Romun had indeed grown; It was harder to hold him in my arms than before. I should enjoy these passing moments, only Galyx knew when this corva would be too big to hold.
And then I would be the one resting under his wings... I shook my head. The thought was weird enough to be pondered more.
When standing, I could feel the breeze's even colder embrace. It was hazy around us. Romun seemed to inflate as he puffed his coat. His head nearly vanished. ”Jealousness” was an appropriate word to describe my feelings. I wished I could've done that too since the breeze felt like several vampiric bites on my face.
”Let's go. I still have things to do.”
Romun slept in my arms the whole way back, that little fluffball. I couldn't stop thinking that moments like these were not going to last forever. I wanted to protect my stryx... How was that going to happen when I would be smaller than him?
--------
Ah, how I loved our home. As soon as I opened the door, Romun jumped down and hopped over to the fireplace. Stars shone above our roof, the moon rose up in the horizon. I kicked the shoes off, strode to living room and slumped on a pile of soft pillows in a shadowy nook. It was lovely to warm myself in front of the fireplace after spending so much time outside. My feet didn't feel a thing.
My dad was laying on the other side of the room, a mint cookie in his mouth. He gave me a smile when I came in.
”Did Romun run off today?” he asked.
I snorted. ”No. But he has grown.”
”Yes he has. He's going to be a beautiful dragon. I saw his wings just this morning and I...”
”I wanted to talk about that, dad”, I distrubed his flying words, ”When is he actually big enough to fly?”
Dad dwelled in his thoughts for a while. Or then he was just really enjoying that mint cookie.
”I can't say for sure, but it's going to take some time. Maybe a year from this day... It won't happen overnight, Aren, but I trust you already knew that.”
Romun napped so close to the fireplace I was scared that the flames would burn his coat. As father talked I kept my eye on the stryx, just in case...
”I got a letter from Mallarch”, I mumbled, ”It was about a star I'd love to see... But I need Romun with me. I couldn't just leave him here.”
”Patience, my darling. He needs more training. And love. Actually, you better take a look at this...”
Dad tucked his hand in his pocket and took out a chunk of hair ribbons. His eyes were serious.
”These were in his nest.”
I stared at the ribbons. So that's where they were...
”These have your scent on them. He has grown attached to you, Aren”, my father continued, demanding my attention. ”He shows it by bringing you all the things he has seen you use on daily basis. You may think it's an irritating habit but he doesn't know how else to show that he loves you.”
I didn't break the silence that fell after father stopped talking. The fireplace and occasional sound of Romun's talons scratching the floor filled the space with dreamy atmosphere. I slowly stood up. A thick and soft carpet that covered the small area between the relaxing zone and dining table was dragged closer to the fireplace. Pillows piled up in my hand and soon found their place on the carpet.
”I'm going to sleep here this night”, I stated bluntly. Father smirked with a heartwarming laugh.
”Well, whatever you say, dear. Romun might wake up and smother your face in the middle of the night, though.”
I should've known better since the next morning I woke up to the stryx sitting on my face. Yes, he has become bigger, but also he has gained some weight.
