I can't believe I just now thought of that title, wow. Given his shtick, it seems kind of obvious now.

If I may indulge in a bit of story crafting, Malchem is an optimistic cynic. His business of selling poisons revolves around people seeking petty revenge or harming others. He's glad everyone sucks, because it guarantees business. In the off chance he's confronted by someone genuinely nice and caring, his confidence shakes a bit. He doesn't like to dwell on the misery his products could bring to those who don't deserve it, but he tries to convince himself that he's not "really" to blame, having not directly and immediately caused it. His business requires that he detaches himself from that notion, or else he might become racked with guilt.

I think he'd gradually become more acquainted with Apothy, and start to question his whole business practice. Later down the line, he'd even try to help Apothy out in ways that aren't always that helpful or wanted. Despite their differences, Malchem takes a natural admiration to Apothy's hard work and dedication, even if it's not as profitable. They're still quite similar in some ways, and Apothy doesn't like admitting that in the least, but it's oddly comforting to have someone like that around for him.
