Bereft of a Lifeline: Choose Your Own Adventure, Part 1!  ** Go to my Instagram to participate ** The following is a scenario which will ask you to make a choice that may lead to success or disaster, so choose wisely…  Comment below with your vote as the most popular choice will decide the direction of this story and the next illustration in this series.

You awake suddenly with a strained, high-pitched gasp.  A shrieking alarm accompanied by several flashing, violently red lights leads forth an all out assault on your slowly returning senses.  But aside from a splitting headache, you appear to have no major injuries; a miraculous feat given the state of the surrounding spaceship.  The past is a blur.  While traveling toward your prime objective, all you can remember is seeing some sort of anomaly followed by a sudden impact.  Messages on a nearby console relay multiple critical system failures.  Unnerved by the lack of fellow crew, your fingers tap open the ship’s monitoring systems, but find no active signal besides your own.

Congrats, you’ve been promoted!  A weight presses down inside your chest as friendly  faces turn to dust within your mind.  Unfortunately, there is little time for grief.

Working diligently, you diagnose and reboot the ship’s systems causing the noisy cacophony to die down as life support stabilizes, a small victory in an ocean of potentially deadly outcomes.   Sadly though, all communication and propulsion systems have been fully knocked offline including faster than light travel.  For now, you are stuck.  On top of that, one other wrinkle presents itself to you as a point of curiosity.  Defying logic, a friendly signal has been picked up from the planet directly below.  Suspicious is an understatement.  So, what is your course of action?  Again, choose wisely…

Choice A: Stick to the manual, attempt to repair the ship.  It’s best to ignore the signal for now and focus on possible repair efforts to the propulsion systems.  Mobility is the fastest route to rescue.  Though, this means needing to do a solo space walk as those systems are directly exposed to the vacuum of space.

Choice B: Play it safe, go grab something to eat and hunker down.  It’s best to secure the necessities and wait for potential rescue.  Food, water, air, and shelter; these matter most of all.  With life support stabilized, food and water are top priority.  Besides, nobody functions properly on an empty stomach.  A growl echoing from your stomach solidifies your desire to venture to the canteen.

Choice C: Risk it all, immediately jettison an escape pod to land at the site of the signal.  You feel the weight of the impending doomsday clock counting down upon you as this hunk of junk slowly, inevitably becomes your coffin.  Better to die on solid ground than in the vastness of space never to be found.  The database lists this planet as barren of life and though the previously reported scan is very old, the chances of hostile life developing within that time are highly improbable.
