they settle them selves just under the surface of lava with just the plume floating in the hot air. the plume is used to distract pokemon and when they get close they open up and blast them with concentrated fire and pull them into the shell then hide themselves under the surface again. people based ancient armor on them as they were feared by people because of their ability to attack and kill just about anything. when volcanoes erupt they are some time thrown out and land in terrible places for them and people meaning their a danger no mater where you are. they have been found thousands of years after an eruption buried under ground still alive and dangerous.
they can also live in dried up lava flows.
