One of my more interesting pictures, this. Cave Story is one of my all-time favourite games, and I was following the blog of Nicalis, the developer, during the run-up to its release on Wiiware. When a call was put out in Spring 2010 for fan artists to promote the game, I leaped at the opportunity. Unfortunately, the timing was extremely awkward because I was moving out to London at the time and most of my furniture had to be sold - including the PC. What resulted was an insane rush-job between finishing this pic, packing away my stuff and cleaning up the flat. This was completed and sent off less than two hours before a buyer came around to pick up the computer.

Words cannot express how exhausted I was when I reached London after the final crunch, but I felt the extra effort was worth it. Fans will no doubt recognize this scene from the game after Quote and Curly Brace defeat the island core. The tremendous irony is that not only did Nicalis forget to showcase this pic along with all the other artists' contributions, but I was offered a free copy of Cave Story upon release when I didn't even have a Wii!

There is an upside, though. Everyone's art was printed out onto a canvas and sent off to different editors to help promote the game. Believe it or not, mine is currently hanging on the wall of the editor of Kotaku.com! But you know what the best part it? My name is in the game's credits! Near the end is listed "Christopher Reavey" as one of the people given special thanks. Now Cave Story players around the world will gaze upon my name and wonder in a hushed awe over the identity of this lucky individual. This is my 15 minutes.

I'm looking forward to Cave Story 3D's release too. If you haven't played the original game, do so this instant ! It's has some really lovable characters and is one of the finest example of old-skool platforming that is bound to appeal to Mega Man and Metroid fans. Hard to imagine that is was designed entirely by one person...
