Because we practically never see one without the helmet
And it could have benefits
For example
Bumping into someone going over a 10,000 miles an hour head first XD

If I had to guess what it really is
The helmet is probably an exoskeletal helmet of some kind, kinda like the outside of a Xenomorph
Tho that has to be made from some unnaturally hard material if it can withstand a Ten Thousand mile per hour crash
I imagine the XLR8 species also has like internal airbags that help soften their crashes

Their planet has constant deadly lightening storms so speed is key

I love how your XLR8 looks. He has both an organic and metallic look to him, which is very fitting for XLR8.
