Story:

With the cubs in tow, Simba and Sarabi travelled to unit them with their father. Chumvi was still living on the Prideland border, alongside the rogues Tojo and Mheetu. The three males were shaken when the King told them about the riot and asked them to keep the cubs safe. Even with his two friends, Chumvi was apprehensive.  Single fathers were a rarity among lions, especially when a male's size made more difficult to hunt. Then, Chumvi turned his attention to Nuka.  Since the eldest was actually Scar's only child, Chumvi asked if he preferred to live with his mother or step-parent.

Suddenly, a familiar voice declares that the siblings shouldn't be split up at all. Zira steps out from the bushes, correctly guessing that Simba would try to bring her cubs to Chumvi. Technically outside the pridelands, Simba and Sarabi couldn't chase her off, only warning her to not touch them. Surprisingly, Zira hardly battered Simba an eye. Rather, she was staring at Chumvi. Since neither of them were living at Priderock anymore, Zira claimed Chumvi was obligated to join her side and raise their cubs together. They were mates after all.

Going silent for a moment, Chumvi reminds Zira that they aren't mates. He may have fathered Zira's second litter, but they didn't love each other - Scar simply needed a surrogate for his heir. Zira snarled she didn't care for technicalities, they still needed to live together to raise their cubs. Chumvi asks where Zira intends them to live. The striped lioness explains that she gathered up the pridesisters who fled during the riot. They're confused and frustrated, so Zira offered them leadership - Her and Chumvi could be the King and Queen of this outcasted pride, raising Kovu as their heir. A new royal family.

Chumvi declines, saying that Zira's new pride could be misconstrued as Scar loyalists. Chumvi claims they should ask for Simba's forgiveness and take whatever offer they can get. The Brown lions declares he wants to take Simba's earlier proposal, of Kovu and Vitani joining him as rogues on the border. It was the most obvious way for their cubs to have a peaceful life.

Zira laughs. She didn't consider that a "peaceful life": Being reduced to rogues on the border, constantly needing to suck up to the revengeful King, so their punishments don't get steeper. Zira argued the happiest life their children could lead - Is both parents being present in their life and becoming the leaders of this new pride. They could finally have their dignity back.

Still, Chumvi declines Zira's offer to join her. He said he was never prepared to a king. Snapping, Zira yells that Chumvi was once Scar's second-in-command and a strong male, of course, he can be a king. When Chumvi won't budge, Zira leaps on him, shouting that he's a coward.

Kovu screams for his parents to stop fighting, but Simba yanked him back for his safety, albeit too roughly.  Meanwhile Vitani and Nuka watch with restraint. Nuka was naturally on his mother's side, not caring for somebody he barely knew. Vitani was conflicted on which side she agreed with. She thought her mother's ambitious plans could be dangerous, but she didn't like Chumvi's suggestion of separating her from Nuka either.

Declaring that Chumvi was dead to her, Zira asked if her cubs were coming with her. Quickly, Nuka joined her and Vitani followed, preferring her survival chances with a pride, rather then three rogues. Kovu tearfully didn't want to leave his father behind, but he couldn't let go of Zira, Vitani and Nuka in the process. Eventually, Kovu was forced to go with his mother.
