Those pictures are really cute there and honestly, i am not having problems with the pair itself and specially because a friend of mine is a fan of it.
I cant help but feel tough that Layer had an unfortunate debut. After all, X8 appeared after the disaster of X7 so a lot had to be cleaned, and the armor of her doesnt fit the personality....and the ankward design of her armor overshadows everything else the chars. Bad combinations of factors and that leads to a disaster, add it the issue of rival shippings and.......a char gets the flack. Persnoally i pity her, but lately, while nto changing my shipping choices, im showing a bit of a soft spot for her.
Im a ZeroXiris shipper, but i respect your choices and im going to confess...i would had been more on board on the sip may the circunstances be different.

I actually have a problem with any female robot with boobs. Layer's design of her underboobs is like of any female robot with boobs, it is just useless, other than the fact it's for "fan service". If I were to get real nit picky, the hair Zero has isn't necessary for a robotic design. All these designs, including Layer's aussie cleavage is "fan service", it has nothing to do with armor and whatnot.
I don't really care for Iris's role tbh. When she made a first appearance, it bothered me that her sole role was Zero's love interest. Not too much in depth with her character, and not too much personality. And that very same game, they made her out to be a tragic love fight with Zero, that angst stuff was too quick for me. I don't dislike Iris entirely, just wished they did her better with character development. With Layer being the "new girl", it can changed the script a little. I like how she isn't all lovely gagged with him, more like a crush. It's slow paced, and that's perfect for someone as serious as Zero. And she isn't entirely a navigator, she is skilled with fighting. There needs to be a lot put into Layer's character I will admit, but it's a start to be something good (if megaman x9 were to ever come out...). But I digress, I just like Layer's potential.
If you want, you can become a member of the ZeroxLayer Group. It's not always about them being together, people sometimes draw Layer because the girl needs more fan art tbh lol. And if your friend isn't already a member, why not tell them to join? The group can always use some love.

Well about designs.....the things i begun to think would be the prupose and stuff. Once reploids begun to show a barrir to be like humans i could imagine the scientists making them to appeal. I think by the year of the 21XX they were able to fix the uncanny valley or they made them like manekins. Honestly i have nothing against showy armors but the design ahs to fit the type of robot you are building....i mean. You make a robot that is made to be a model? you can justify some stuff more, but in some enviroments like navigation, it could benefit with a dress code...or at least not make it too distracting. I know reploid wont care for that aspect....the lust part, but..yeah.
About the character stuff?....That i admit you make a point. I like the pair but some points needed a bit more of cooking to make it more formidable. A lil more development, X4 debuted in 97 and games were begining to make things a bit more cinematicl is very obvious X attempted something and while scene remains ehartbreaking, i do understand than it could had benefited with more worldbuilding. Layer could benefit with development or background..or i dunno....the plan im thinking? TO make her stand as a navigator on her own and not let her crush on Zero be the noe defining thing, nor let her akward armor be the other thing anyone will talk. Im not talking abuot the reploids but the fan community. If i were to remake X4...the plan should be to build up the relationship....and in the process ensure to show that no matter what was giong to be the result, Iris was not going to end well.

I don't think the designs mean anything personally. The only thing I can piece together that with the humans is going all the way back to Dr.Light. He designed Mega man as a boy and Roll as a girl. I can see how he wanted his robots to appear that way, so he can feel like he has a family. I can see even X fitting in that appeal. But the artist for x designed them like that because it's appealing for female robots to have boobs. Manikins are anatomy based on the human body, it's purpose is to look like human for clothing wear. Even if you're being critical of just Layer's design, there are other female characters that are just as voluptuous; it's not just her. Even Alia is a bit racy compared to Iris, but it's because Iris is an old design. Iris's appeal is to be more "teenage girl", that's why her armor is a dress.
I wouldn't mind if they changed Layer a little, design or whatnot. If that's the direction they go with. I see a lot of the community drawing Layer on her own, I do too. I even made a "zero" layer. Of course I draw Zelay, but I like Layer on her own. Despite her under boobage, I like her design a little bit. She looks futuristic to me. But I agree, the community can draw her alone more. I would even like to read some fan fiction of her, it doesn't have nt result her and Zero as a pair.

Iris: A dumbass who actually thought the best way to win Zero's love was to fight him, turn on him, and create a world she knew he wouldn't want to live in.
Layer: A hard working Navigator who does her best to keep Zero out of harm's way and respects weather he'll like her back or not.

Iris isn't His first love, because in the game, they never fall in love with each other, Zero only was worried because he was blaming himself, for the dead of a inocent person.
The fans of Zero × Iris misunderstanding the pain of Zero with love, AND THE dreams of iris to leave in a World for reploids, because the humans don't accept them.
