You definitely got some interesting marks with the carving tool. The use of colors is nice, too.
My only complaint might be in the composition of the piece overall; it seems like your eye flows down the hills in the back there, gets to the tree, and then stops. As a viewer, I'm not really encouraged to follow through the rest of the picture.
Also, if you read the lines in the hill as directional lines (which I think, given that they -are- superfluous lines, you're inclined to) you get a little bit muddled, since there are so many going all over the place. If they were all headed in one direction, maybe with a curve, you could use them to guide the viewer around and create more of a flow within the picture plane.
And I can't tell what that brown thing in the bottom left is, but it seems to be leading me out of the image.
