Thank you so much for your nice words. It was indeed a difficult shot. It took a while. It's a seagull, but I'm not certain I know the proper name.

I really enjoy this shot - most seagull shots are far away and lack detail. I really like the detail in the feathers - it is absolutely beautiful and awesome that you got this clarity in a motion shot. The depth of field of the shot is perfect to really put all of the focus on the bird but perhaps lessening the blur would make the shot less surreal. Black and white is a good choice, I think color would have been too distracting with the background (which I'm sure was orignally pretty colorful). Overall this is one of my favorite bird shots.

Awesome work! Keep it up!

Sorry I'm late for the reply, I was out of town. For someone who defines herself as "confused", you are spot on!
The gull was the only thing which was black and white on this picture and the background was really too colorful to sustain the viewer's attention to the bird. I'm very happy you liked this photo, cause I felt really proud for taking it!

Don't worry about late responses - I don't expect everyone to be on dA everyday with time to go through all their messages. I was more confused in my younger years and since I've been here for 4 years now I think I can safely say that as far as photography is concerned I'm less confused. I'm glad you felt accomplished after taking this shot, it's alway great to know that you actually captured what you were trying to get or maybe even something better !

I love this picture, The sharp bird and the blurry background. Was it hard to capture the bird ??Or lucky shot I have chased birds so often, and just 1 of the 1000000 shots turned out nice
And Although I really understand that you choose to make it a black/white picture, I'm really wondering how the colors are, especially in the (blurry) back, Blue see, and grey stone ?? Or is the top covered in grass, or is it more sand?
I love the composition, don't change anything about it ! The bird on the left, so you can see were it's flying towards. Maybe you could move the bird a little down, so it's really in the middle of the left.
Pff now I almost lost this comment by pushing the wrong button >.< But well it's still here.
Anyway, I love it ! and keep up the good work !

I was shooting the gulls for about an hour and this shot was taken somewhere in the middle of that time span. The main colour in the background is a khaki tone, as it is a rocky mountain with low bushes not so far from there and across the lake. On the bottom part there is a little red from the tiled house roofs on the other side and some lighter shades of green. I didn't want to create any distraction from the subject, so I was based on the fact that the gull's colours were only black and white. As for the framing, I'm trying not to crop my pictures and so this is the original framing I managed to do while chasing the bird in the sky. Perhaps a little lower might have worked better and I did manage to get a similar one with that framing. My reasoning behind keeping this one, though, was the fact that the bird is looking downwards, giving the impression that its intention is to move diagonally to the bottom right of the frame and so the extra space on the bottom makes that happen, making it as if the gull is looking at that exact corner of the frame. I'm slightly bending the rule of thirds here, but some rules are meant to be broken!

Thank you for your review! I'm really happy you liked it!

yea, I think that much different color in the background would be distracting
And np, I liked your answer to (is also a way of learning )

Very stunning photograph!
Definitely one that catches your attention on a page full of others!
I love the seemingly simple composition, and the elegance the bird shows thanks to the timing of the photo!
And the black and white definitely directs the viewrs focus straight to the gull!
Nicely done

What a lovely photograph!

I absoloutely love the way you have captrued the bird in the foreground in such high detail, leaving the background very fuzzy. The bird here is completely in motion - I can imagine it having to flap its wings any moment to stop it falling out of the image altogether

Perhaps if I were to change anyhting about this image, I would maybe lessen the blurryness of the background by just a tad. Although it draws attention to the seagull very nicely, it makes the image feel quite detatched, and slightly heavy.

Overall though, a great shot

Oh, thank you so much!!! You know, the thing about the blurriness would have been a bit of a challenge for the D5000 this was taken with. I would have to have a smaller aperture and a higher ISO (perhaps some noise) or lower shutter speed (motion blur). That's a great mental exercise!!!
Thank you so much for your nice words and for your constructive criticism! Always appreciated!
