Just something cute, and most likely true. Why else would he stay to defend mages, even if you help him understand the opposing view? Hatred is consuming, and only one thing overpowers or equals hate. And, if Hawke was there the whole time, with him through everything even as just a friend. Well.... To a person who has never had something like that, it would mean everything. Plain and simple.(I'm classifying this as a Fenris folder project, because it goes for all Hawkes no matter which just happens to be depicted.)
