The one on the left is easier to see, and to look at the main focus is much better a well. Perhaps you could make the background more interesting with a gradient of blue to black, because simply black is never as interesting as the aforementioned.

Nice idea, I could try augmenting the background -- this was just a product of me being lazy and deleting the area around him. But I don't know if adding gradients will cancel out the black holey feel of being in the "matrix"...

Well if you male the background slightly lighter, and then add darker shades around the borders of the image, then it could show isolation as well. It's a commonly used effect~
