Description One of the first images from the earlier days of my photography. This was taken back in 2008 in Japan after getting my first entry-level dSLR. Looking back from now, I felt it was not as well taken and could be improved in so many ways...

I thought the human silhouettes at the base of the gate gave it a sense of scale and also created an interesting effect.

Gives me an urge to want to visit each prefecture once more...

Hi Jeff!
Oh so you just visited Japan recently? Which prefectures did you visit apart from Hiroshima? ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Crisosphinx In reply to gnohz [2012-01-19 07:38:00 +0000 UTC]

Ah, no I visited about 13 years ago. I lived in Hiroshima, visited Kyoto, Tokyo, Miyajima, Osaka, and most of the areas in between! I lived there for 4 and a half years all together but the second time was 2 and a half.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

gnohz In reply to Crisosphinx [2012-01-19 07:47:42 +0000 UTC]

Great to hear that! I'm envious that you could live there for so many years!
I lived in Osaka and Tokyo, and when I was in Osaka, I travelled to all the places you mentioned, and I also went up to Aomori and down to Yamaguchi. I'd love to do that again!

Were you there for school or something?

Crisosphinx In reply to gnohz [2012-01-19 07:54:51 +0000 UTC]

My dad had a work-trip with Ford, for Mazda. As a result, he took the family with him. Most of my memories come from Japan! I grew up in the Hakushima district, going to the Hiroshima International School (H.I.S.) and then switching to Hakushima Elementary School. I still can't believe I went to school right next to the Johoku train station (or what was left of it). The Hondori was one of my favorite places to be!

gnohz In reply to Crisosphinx [2012-01-19 08:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see! So you were quite near to the Hiroshima station
It must have been a great place to experience life there. I also went to Kure, to the Yamato museum (I think) down south.
So that means you went to elementary school together with other Japanese children? It must have been tough trying to pick up the language at first How old were you then?

Crisosphinx In reply to gnohz [2012-01-19 13:13:56 +0000 UTC]

8 or 9. It was difficult. I was picked on by the only half-English, half-Japanese boy there. I guess the girls thought I was cute or people paid more attention to me than him (hair color was probably part of that).

What a way to experience life. Most of my memories before that are gone. Japan had more than a lasting impression on me.
