Description

While pursuing the Neo-Nazi criminal Peter Vollmer, Steven Rogers and his target stumbled through a portal that took them back to the late 18th century during the American Revolution. The two happened to cross paths with Benedict Arnold.

Vollmer, being more familiar with Arnold by his reputation as a traitor than through actual history, tried to shoot Arnold under the assumption killing the infamous traitor would make him a hero. Steve didn’t know where they were in the past they were, for all he knew, Vollmer might end up killing Arnold before his betrayal.

Despite Stever’s attempts to avoid being seen, subduing Vollmer made enough noise that Arnold noticed the two. Confused, Arnold assumed that Captain America was some sort of traveling performer. Deciding that was easier to buy than the truth, Steve stated he was a performer but had also been sent to stop the assassin sent to kill Arnold. This just served to confuse Arnold, who questioned why Washington hadn’t informed him of an assassination, to which Steve claimed the information came on short notice. He would have told the general if he had found him before finding the assassin.

Captain America thought it would be dangerous to alter history, but given Benedict Arnold’s betrayal didn’t affect the outcome of the war, there didn’t seem to be any harm in telling him how highly George Washington thought of the man. There was no guarantee knowing how highly Washington thought of him would have changed anything.

Arnold was grateful to hear the praise Washington had for him, even if it was secondhand. Unfortunately for Steve, convincing Arnold he was someone who personally worked with the leader of the Continental Army stuck him in a position where he was expected to be Arnold’s bodyguard, which would make it all the more difficult to find a way to a way to return to the present.

Vollmer’s fate was far worse. Arnold tried to have the man interrogated but quickly dismissed him as insane with his claims he was from the future and that Arnold would defect. Steve questioned if Vollmer had any regrets for the innocent man he shot who criticized him at his rally. He didn’t, which made it easier to leave the Neo-Nazi to his execution.

It was through a bit of luck that Steve met a strange man in a blue box who called himself The Doctor who was able to come up with phony orders that Steve was to be transferred elsewhere.

Steve was confused as to how this strange man knew so much about him, and the answers he got made him more concerned since he was told many others were traveling across history. This Doctor, however, promised he was trying to keep things from getting mucked up from events like Captain America getting stuck in the 18th century.

The Doctor’s time machine malfunctioned, the man giving a reaction that said this happened regularly, temporarily landing in England, at the homestead of Benedict Arnold. The former officer questioned if the man who previously saved his life had come to kill him for his betrayal.

It was difficult to explain what he was doing there, so Captain America simply questioned if Arnold knowing what Washington thought of him wasn’t enough. He was prepared for the possibility that mere words wouldn’t be enough to hurt the pain from how Arnold fought so hard, won many victories, and was thanked with distrust and indignities by the Continental Congress.

Arnold had many more questions, like how this stranger knew so much about him, but felt he owed answers to the man who saved his life.

While it helped knowing how highly Washington thought of him, Arnold believed that Washington and the Continental Congress were making a mistake allying with the French. While his former comrades would be hanged for treason if they lost, having seen France as the enemy for so long, he believed the French would betray the colonies after the English were defeated and allying with them was just inviting in another enemy.

Seeing he was wrong meant that Arnold betrayed Washington over fears that were unfounded, and even if it got a future for his wife and children, this also meant he was going to go through life remembered as a traitor and would no doubt be remembered a traitor in America.

Captain America heard from the Doctor it was possible to return to the present. He wasn’t sure if Arnold would believe that, so he simply gave him the truth that was easy to buy; he hadn’t come for revenge. By this point, killing Arnold would be meaningless.

The return to the present left Captain America with a reminder that people may go to extremes out of the fear the cause they believed in will fail. The Doctor noted that he had seen such things himself, and Steven asked if that was his fate.

“Does my answer really matter? If I told you that you stopped believing in your cause, would you double down on it now? If I told you that stick to your beliefs, does it change anything? And since you no doubt think I’m just some oddball who cannot control his time machine, you probably aren’t viewing me as a reliable source of information.”

This eccentric time traveler was wiser than he appeared. Even if Captain America believed he would betray his values in the future, it would not change he acted in the present. He would keep fighting for what he believed as long as he could.

The Dark Knight gave us the famous line “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” This sums up Benedict Arnold, if he died before 1780, he would have been remembered as a hero of the American Revolution, but he lived his and his betrayal overshadows all the victories he won.

So I felt like writing a bit of a historical drama with Captain America meeting the man who felt let down by the cause he fought for. However, I thought it would be more tragic to depict Arnold as a man who thought he was doing the right thing.

The Doctor is a deus ex machina, I admit, so realizing that I wanted to write him adding something. Also it was fun including a joke with the most feared being in his verse leaving a bad first impression because his time machine doesn’t work right, especially since the Doctor has a history of losing control where the Tardis is going. Looking at a book on the franchise’s history, the First Doctor never got the Tardis to go where he wanted when we saw him direct it.

Using Peter Vollmer from The Twilight Zone episode He’s Alive was just something I did because I wanted to give the criminal a name and felt like using somebody who wouldn’t be a big deal leaving stuck to be executed.

I own nothing!
