END TRANSMISSION

It was thanks to the above transmission from the aptly named Space Probe U.N.S. Discovery that humanity discovered that in the realms of space exploration the dragons had, as they had in so many other pursuits, gotten there long before us.

The idea behind this is simple: dragons get everywhere. Thus it follows they get into outer space. Thus: Space Dragons!

Space Dragons are huge, this one is obvious only a juvenile, and live off of solar energy they collect using the photovoltaic cells imbedded in the scales of their belly and the fins of their wings. They supplement this power by eating space debris, which they filter out of the void with baleen-like teeth. They have an air-lock in their esophagus, and their digestive system is similar to a subterranean cave on earth, with a high nitrogen based atmosphere and a small ecosystem of molds and fungus that aid in digestion. Though they live their entire lives (upwards of several hundred thousand years) in outer space, they must lay their eggs on a planet with liquid water and an atmosphere. Because of this, it is suspected that they have carried the seeds of life to many planets throughout the galaxy.

Space Dragons move slowly, using their wings to sail on the solar wind, and sling-shot from planet to planet. For traveling great distances they create rifts in the Space-Time Continuum, hence the term Worm-hole.

Space Dragons are highly intelligent, peaceful, and have no natural predators or prey.

No one knows where they came from, or how long they have been around (except it is far, far longer than us).

You know, this kind of coincides with a theory a friend and I came up with. Dragons are... dragons. They are possibly the most eccentric things in the universe. They manage to appear everywhere, even if it's just in the background causing random trouble. There are dragons under oceans, in high mountain caves, even taunting poor little princesses who have been reduced to wearing paper bags. Every fantasy world has at least one dragon. Thus, it made sense to us that, they all originate from one planet or dimension or other form of place, and, as you said, get everywhere else. It also explains why people know so little about them, other than they're big, somewhat frightening and breath fire (or ice, be that the case with some).

...and I'm utterly rambling, now. xP;

Actually, that pretty much sums up my attitude towards dragons: they're everywhere! 8D

Which makes them awesome. Oh yes. xD

On a side note, I wanted to refer you here... [link]

Thanks for the inspiration. :]

On another side note, both those girls are dragons! Yay!

Extremely cool! I love the background too. 8D Great concept, and that backstory is neat.

Space Dragons, woooo, now that's a concept. Imagine the sound of that roar [on a planet of course, in space no one can hear you scream!]. XD

Dang... That's one big dragon! I hope she is nice enough to not screw up the gravitational pulls of the universe too much. With something that big you can't be to careful!

GoldeenHerself In reply to TheLadyGrey [2008-10-24 22:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh, those dragons don't get much bigger than one of Mars's moons… hardly something that would have universal effects.

This has to be one of the coolest things I've seen in recent memory! I can't decide what's better: the pic or the description ofit.

How small the human probe is compared to the space dragon reminds me of another pic ofs yours: Man's End. Both seem to be about dragons keeping human arrogance in check.

What can I say? Dragons are just bigger than humans.

how do you get white in your drawings? do you not colour there? and how did you make the moon and the bug/star shine? did you use black paper as your base? I think that's what you did, but I am not to certain. The silver-metalic colour you gave the dragon was really great. I hope some day I have your talents in traditional drawings ^^'

GoldeenHerself In reply to KMAC-Fromthebbs [2008-10-21 19:50:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!

To answer your questions:

I get the white by two methods: 1, leaving the paper "clean" by not applying color there, and then blending that area into the rest using a white pencil.

The shine effect is done by leaving a light trace of color around the shining object, and then coloring over it with white, so that the light spreads out into the dark.

Nope! I used regular white paper as the base.

Thanks again, and good luck to you!

I'm trying to do that with my clouds...and going over them several times with white may help.

I'll try to do that next time, after I get this one drawing done....it's taking hours...

You're rather welcome. As much as I hate shameless self-promotion, you read any of my most recent posts?

Know what is ungood? I have the HSC for the next fortnight-ish. Which means that I can't listen to 2 Sense because it's too much of a distraction.

However, I did use 2 as my supplementary text for one of my essays... Think he'll be proud?

I'll shush now lol

I'm afraid to say I haven't! Generally I have to limit the time I spend on the net, so as a result I don't often get the time to read poetry or prose submissions as they are posted, but I got back and check on them when I have the time.

By the by, I think 2 would be honored.

See also: "Wyrm-hole", considering that wyrm was the original term for dragon. Maybe something was twisted over the milennia...

Very interesting idea! I want to see more.

GoldeenHerself In reply to DarkestElemental616 [2008-10-21 00:54:00 +0000 UTC]

Hee hee, I liked that! And in fact "worm" can also be used to mean dragon, as well as "wyrm." (Also "orm" from what I've read… I was really pleased with myself for thinking of that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkestElemental616 In reply to GoldeenHerself [2008-10-21 01:01:10 +0000 UTC]

I believe "worm" is an alternate/older spelling of "wyrm", which is why I mentioned it.

GoldeenHerself In reply to DarkestElemental616 [2008-10-21 01:25:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes! Of course… I thought for a moment you were saying they were something different… silly me!

And I just checked! "Worm" is derived from the Old English "wyrm"… so you were right! Only… the other way around.

DarkestElemental616 In reply to GoldeenHerself [2008-10-21 01:36:11 +0000 UTC]
