Description "Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold."
-Leo Tolstoy

One evening, my fiancΓ©e and I were at Long Sands Beach at York Beach, Maine just strolling the shore and taking pictures when we decided that since it was close to sunset, we'd make one last stop at the "Nubble" lighthouse and call it a day. Along the way, we noticed the setting sun was beginning to turn normally white buildings this intense yellow/gold color. I knew the lighthouse must also be this color and that the light would change very quickly, so we rushed there as fast (and safely) as possible. When we arrived, I somehow managed to find a parking spot, leaped out of my car and ran to the broken boulders along the water's edge, setting up my tripod as I sprinted. Out of breath, this stitched pano was the first shot I attempted. As the light slowly crept up the island, I snapped off as many different compositions as I could think of before too much of the building was no longer gilded in sunlight. This pano and Nubble Light are my favorites.

It is a beaut. Someday, I'd love to spend a summer on York Beach. Just rent a cottage or a beach house, you know? One can dream...

Yea.. I wanted to retire there..but the wife would have nothing to do with Maine Winter.. lol (not much worse than here in Connecticut..but...).. At least we get a couple days there..

That's true. We've been to York Beach a few times in the winter just to beat the cabin fever, but it sure is brutal with that onshore wind.

Thanks! It certainly was a challenge to keep a cool head when things in front of me were changing right before my eyes. It sure was a neat experience.

this is a beautiful shot! you got very lucky with the light this image wouldn't be the same without it.

goldomega In reply to anarane [2010-09-05 22:03:56 +0000 UTC]

Very lucky indeed. The light was changing so fast, I had maybe 3-5 minutes total to shoot whatever compositions I could think of before the light crept too far up the island.

I'd love to live in York, just for a summer. That'd be relaxing as anything. Maybe when I'm retired. Of course, I bet by then you'd need to be Bill Gates or Warren Buffet to rent property there.

You're not wrong. Waterfront and Historical Town equal $$$$$$. This is why I have to live at home with my mother. (it's a good arrangement: keep up with the house and animals and that's it. ) There were a few houses (with acreage, I'm sure) that sold for many millions USD. Wooof. Bet THEY can afford Bose radios.

Thanks! The golden light on the house was the last few rays of sunlight before the sun crept below the horizon. Very unusual for this lighthouse.

I had thought about that. I couldn't bring myself to crop off the top or bottom in this case. I probably should have shot this a bit wider, but there was very little time for decisionmaking.
