Description (Becca walks across the stage alone)
BECCA: Hi, my name is Becca. I am going to give you a glimpse of my life story. A few months ago I lost my father and my world fell apart, but by the glory of God I rose up and won the battle against depression, anger, loss of faith, and everything that stood in my way including my own self. Instead of telling you everything, how about I just show you? (She walks off stage and lights dim)

Scene One
(Becca walks into her bedroom and throws her book bag onto the bed. She seems frazzled. So she starts to pace for a few moments and then sits down on the bed and puts her head into her hands.)

BECCA: (mumbling) why can’t people just mind their own business?
MOM: (poking her head in the doorway after knocking) Becca, honey, are you okay?
BECCA: I’m fine mom. Just leave me alone. (She gets up and goes to her desk)
MOM: Now I know that isn’t true Becca. Just tell me what’s bothering you. Did something happen at school?
BECCA: Nothing happened; I am just tired of people who think it’s their business to come up to me and apologize for what happened to dad.
MOM: What do you mean?
BECCA: (starting to pace again but slowly) Ever since dad died everyone can’t stop telling me that they are sorry, and today was going to be a good day because  I had finally forgotten about being sad for a minute when somebody else had to say something about it.
MOM: (walks to her daughter and wraps her in a hug) I’m sorry that it upset you and you should be able to be happy but you have to understand that the people that say those things are just trying to help you in the situation. They may not realize that it’s bringing you pain so you might just want to tell them that you are grateful that they care but you just don’t want to talk about it.
BECCA: I guess I could try that. (She pulls away and sits back on the bed) I just want to be alone now mom.
(Mom puts her head down and makes her way out of the room. Becca sits in silence for a few minutes and tears start to roll down her face.)
BECCA: (looking toward the sky) this would be a lot easier if you were here dad. Everything has lost its meaning since you left us. Why would God do this to me if he truly cared? I can’t laugh anymore and mom just doesn’t understand my problems like you did. What I would give just to be able to talk to you just one more time. (She drops her head and lets the tears come in silence.)
END SCENE

Scene Two
(A few days later Becca is sitting on the sidewalk in front of school waiting for her ride with a sketchpad and pencil. Her friend Sarah comes walks up.)

SARAH: Hey Becca. What are you doing?
BECCA: Oh, hey Sarah you scared me. I was just doodling.
SARAH: (takes a seat beside Becca and lays her book bag beside her) what you call doodles most people would call beautiful artwork. You should really start framing your drawings. (She takes the notepad and a puzzled look comes on her face as she studies the picture) Wow Becca, where did this idea come from?
BECCA: (snatching the notebook back) it’s just abstract art.
SARAH: It looks like your trying to transmit something through this and it doesn’t look like something good. What’s wrong with you?
BECCA: (she stands up and shoves the notebook back into her book bag) don’t judge me Sarah. It’s just a stupid drawing.
SARAH: (standing up to) I’m sorry Becca. You know I wasn’t trying to judge you I’m just worried that losing your dad has really done a number on you and the way you have been acting lately is really scaring me.
BECCA: Just stop Sarah! Nothing is wrong with me! I’m perfectly fine! And why does everything have to revolve around the fact that my dad is dead? (She turns and walks off but Sarah catches her by the arm)
SARAH: (in a very calm voice) please Becca, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you mad. I promise I won’t say anything else about it I just can’t lose you as a friend.
BECCA: I guess I overreacted but just don’t say stuff like that okay?
SARAH: (a smile spreads across her face and she holds her hand up) scouts honor.
(They walk off together talking about the geometry test they had to take that day)
END SCENE

Scene Three
(Pastor Lane is sitting at his desk filling out some paper work when there is a knock on the door)

PASTOR: Come in. (he puts the paperwork in a drawer)
MOM: Hello Pastor Lane can I speak to you a moment?
PASTOR: (he stands) of course Teresa. Come in and sit down.
MOM: Thank you Pastor. (She takes a seat in front of his desk and sets her purse beside her)
PASTOR: So what would you like to talk about?
MOM: I’m worried about my daughter Becca. Ever since Steven died she hasn’t been the same. Don’t get me wrong I know that it wouldn’t be normal if she wasn’t sad but this is different. She is angry and she won’t listen to anything I try to tell her. She stays alone all the time and draws abstract pictures that are a mixture of sadness and I don’t know what else but it isn’t good. She thinks that I don’t care that Steven died but I’m just as broken as she is. (She wipes a stray tear away that rolled down her face)
PASTOR: (he leans across his desk) I honestly can’t tell you exactly what you should do Teresa if I did try to tell you it wouldn’t be right and I wouldn’t do that to you. All I can say is that you need to ask God to guide your footsteps to do his will. The bible says in Mathew 21:21-22 “Then Jesus told them “If you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain ‘May God lift you up and throw you into the sea’ and it will happen. If you believe you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.””
MOM: Thank you so much Pastor Lane. I do need to have more faith that God is there for me and my family.
PASTOR: Would you like to pray with me before you leave?
MOM: Yes of course. (They both stand and take each other’s hands)
PASTOR: Dear God I thank you for this wonderful day you have given us and the breath that is in our bodies. God, we ask you to please help Teresa’s daughter. Please help her to see that no matter what you are always by her side caring and watching out for her and also let her understand that you always have a reason for taking someone from this earth. God we thank you that no matter what your will be done. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
MOM: Again, thank you Pastor Lane. I really needed to hear those things.
PASTOR: It is no problem at all Teresa and you are welcome to come see me any time.
MOM: (she gets her purse and heads toward the door) Goodbye Pastor.
PASTOR: Have a nice day Teresa.
END SCENE

Scene Four
(That Sunday Becca is sitting in church when Jack comes up behind her and grabs her shoulders suddenly)

JACK: Gotcha!
BECCA: Oh! (She smiles and smacks Jack on the arm playfully) you jerk!
JACK: (takes a seat beside her on the pew) so what’s up with you Becca?
BECCA: Nothing really. Hey, did you win that photography contest you entered?
JACK: (looking a little disappointed) No I didn’t, they gave it to some kid in South Carolina.
BECCA: I’m sorry Jack. (Putting a hand on his shoulder)
JACK: (he smiles) Oh it isn’t a big deal, but I did want to ask you why you were hanging out with those kids in the school parking lot the other day?
BECCA: I was just making some new friends. They saw some of my drawings and asked if I wanted to chill with them.
JACK: If I were you I wouldn’t chill with them at all Becca. They are trouble makers and being around their influence won’t be good for you. (Becca stands up and looks offended)
BECCA: What is that suppose to mean? (Jack stands to)
JACK: It means that they are bad people and you shouldn’t hang out around them anymore.
BECCA: You can’t tell me who I can and can’t hang out with Jack it’s not your call.
(One of the girls walks into the church. She looks around and finally spots Becca)
GIRL #1: Hey Becca you ready?
JACK: (mumbling) Speaking of the devil. (Becca shoots him a mean look and walks toward the door)
BECCA: Yeah come on let’s go. (As they leave Becca shoves past Sarah as she comes in. Jack plops down on the pew and puts his head in his hands)
SARAH: Are you okay Jack? (She sits beside him)
JACK: No I’m not okay. Becca has always been one of my best friends and now I don’t even recognize the person she has become. Do you know those girls that hang out in the parking lot after school?
SARAH: Yes, I know of them but I haven’t met any of them personally.
JACK: (he gets up and starts to pace) Well Becca has been invited to join them and that’s not good at all. Sarah, those girls are some of the worst you can find. They drink, cuss, smoke, and anything else you can imagine. My dad has been the social worker assigned to some of their cases and you couldn’t even begin to understand some of the things they have gone through but they have all turned to the worst things for comfort. With Becca losing her dad, they are going to try and convince her to do the stuff they use for relief.
SARAH: We have to tell Becca’s mom about this Jack. She may hate us for it but we have to do anything to protect her.
JACK: And after we do that then all we can do is keep her in our prayers.
(Lights dim)
END SCENE

Scene Five
(Girl #1 leads Becca to where the group is sitting behind the church building)

BECCA: Hey you guys
GIRL #2: Hey, Becca is it?
BECCA: Yeah, so what do you guys do when you hang out?
GIRL #3: Lots of stuff dude we just chill.
GIRL #1: Do you want to come with us tonight?
BECCA: Where are you guys going?
GIRL #3: There’s going to be this rave in downtown Charlotte we were invited.
GIRL #2: Just meet us at the gas station by the school around midnight. (For a second a look of worry came over Becca’s face)
GIRL #1: You are cool with sneaking out right?
BECCA: (she hesitated a minute) Yeah I’m cool.
GIRL #1: Well then we’ll see you then.
(Lights dim)
END SCENE

Scene Six
(Mom is sitting in her living room reading her bible when she hears a knock at the door)
MOM: Come in. (Sarah and then Jack come in the door) Oh, hi Jack, Sarah.
JACK: Hey Miss. Teresa
SARAH: yeah hey Miss. Teresa. We were wondering if we could talk to you for a minute.
MOM: Of course, and how many times do I have to tell you two just call me Teresa.
JACK: (they sit down beside Mom on the couch) we wanted to tell you that we are really worried about Becca. (A sad look comes over Teresa’s face)
SARAH: We know that you have seen the way she is changed and we are concerned about that too but now we are worried about some new friends she has made.
JACK: We wouldn’t come to you unless it was most important and this is. These girls are very bad people Teresa and considering how bad Becca has become after your husband died, letting her keep these friends might push her to a point of no return.
TERESA: What do you guys think I can do to keep her from these people?
JACK: Well I heard about a party someone is having tonight so she is probably going to meet with them and go, but you just can’t let her.
(They hear someone coming. Becca walks through the door. Her face drops when she sees Sarah and Jack)
BECCA: What are you two doing here?
SARAH: We just came to check on you Becca to make sure you got home alright.
JACK: Yeah, and now that you are home we can leave. Just know that we love you (he gets up and puts a hand on her shoulder) and the only reason we worry is because we don’t want to lose you. (Becca pulls away)
SARAH: Come on Jack, it’s time to go. Bye Becca. (They exit)
MOM: Where were you sweetie?
BECCA: I was nowhere, but why were they here?
MOM: They were just worried about you.
BECCA: Whatever, I’m going to my room. (She exits)
MOM: (she closes her eyes) God please give me the wisdom to handle this in your way. I can’t do this alone, I need your help. Father, please keep my baby safe no matter what happens. (Tears begin to roll down her face) I wish I had you here Steven; you could help her more than I ever could.
(Lights dim)
END SCENE

Scene Seven
(Jack and Sarah have just left the house and are walking down the street)

JACK: Sarah, what are we supposed to do to keep her from going to that party?
SARAH: Well, we know that Teresa isn’t going to let her out of the house so she is probably going to sneak out. We’ll just have to follow her if it comes down to it.
JACK: I hate to think of Becca as a criminal, but on the other hand I would rather follow her than have to watch as she turns away from God.
SARAH: Jack, if we do catch her sneaking out, we just have to make it clear that we are here for her no matter what and so is God. If we try to tell her that she is wrong and that she needs to do it our way, she’ll turn more away from us than ever. We have to let her find out on her own that what she is doing is wrong.
JACK: okay, now all we have to do is tell Teresa and wait for when the time comes.
(They exit)
END SCENE

Scene Eight
(Becca has gotten out of the house and is almost to the gas station)
BECCA: Hey you guys, I’m here.
GIRL #1: Finally, we have been waiting forever.
GIRL #3: (stumbling drunkenly) and we do not appreciate tardiness lately. (She starts laughing hysterically and falls on Girl #2)
GIRL #2: Whatever let’s just go. I’m ready to party hard. (They make a move to leave but stop when they hear someone coming)
VOICE: Stop right there!
GIRL #1: Crap! Let’s go! You’re on your own Becca! (The three girls take off running leaving Becca alone)
BECCA: Wait! I thought we were friends?
JACK: (from a distance) Becca! Wait! (Jack, Sarah, and Mom run to where Becca is and stop to catch their breath)
MOM: Becca, what do you think you are doing?
BECCA: Just leave me alone! (She runs away)
(Lights dim)
END SCENE

Scene Nine
(Becca runs and collapses to the ground and starts crying. Then she lifts her face to the sky.)

BECCA: Where are you God! Why have you abandoned me! I thought I was your child and that you loved me! All you have ever done for me is taking away the one person who actually listened! (She lies down on the ground and continues to cry)

JACK: (he runs in and spots Becca and then calls back to the others) Hey I found her! (Then he goes to her and wraps his arms around her)
BECCA: Get away from me! (She tries to pull away but he won’t let her go)
JACK: I’m not going to let you go so you might as well stop trying. (Sarah and Teresa run over to them. Sarah crouches down and smoothes the hair out of Becca’s face.)
MOM: (She kneels down with Sarah) sweetie, what in the world has happened to my Becca? The one that could laugh at anything and always wanted to do the thing that was best for everybody.
BECCA: Mom I just wanted to escape from the fact that dad was dead and you didn’t seem to care at all so I couldn’t come to you. My drawings helped me for a while but it came to be too much and I was angry at God for doing this to me. He abandoned me and doesn’t give a crap whether I die or not!
SARAH: (still in a calm voice) you know that isn’t true Becca, you just to have faith that God took your dad for a reason and even though he isn’t here in person you can feel his spirit. (Becca calms down a little bit and sits up)
MOM: Honey, you know I care. I was just trying to be strong for you so you wouldn’t think that I was falling apart. I miss your dad more than anything in this world but I know that I’ll see him again one day.
BECCA: Mom, I would have been a lot better off if you had just shown your true feelings just a little bit.
MOM: I know now that I should have but why did you result to hanging out with these girls?
BECCA: I felt like they were all I had left. But I couldn’t see the two best friends that God placed right in front of my face. (She looks up at Jack and Sarah)
JACK: You know that no matter what happens you can always talk to us Becca, and even if you feel like you can’t talk with us Pastor Lane is always willing to listen.
BECCA: I hope somehow you guys can forgive me for all of this mess, I know I wasn’t myself and I probably hurt your feelings.
SARAH: (With a serious face) I don’t know if I can forgive you Becca. (Everything gets silent as they stare in disbelief at Sarah but slowly a smile creeps across her face.) I’m just kidding what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t forgive you?
(They laugh all together)
(Lights dim)
END SCENE

(Becca walks out to front)
BECCA: Well that was my story. It took hitting rock bottom of crying in the middle of a street for me to finally realize that God hadn’t abandoned me at all. I had just not stopped to be silent and listen. To this day I am still amazed at how God could find the patience to put up with all that I had done and said. That’s what you call love. I hoped you enjoyed seeing my time of trouble and how with the help of God and the people he placed in my life I came out in victory. Goodbye and God bless you!
(Lights dim)
