Legends says since the dawn time Ion Entity created the Martian Race as his Universal Representitives and the Martians thrived for centuries, that's before one of their own suffered an accident which set him on fire and getting infected with Parallax virus, succumbing to fear. Alone in the wilderness, the said Martian evolved into Fernus Parallax aka the Burning Martian and Herald of Fear, with unquenchable power Fernus spread more fear across Mars until half of population was infected with Parallax Virus and became corrupted down to genetic level and transforming into Burning Martians themselves. The situation was so bad that the Ruler of Martians, Ion'Nur was teleported to Oa where Guardians of the Universe consolted him and explained his destiny; Ion'Nur is the Herald of Ion, the Emotional Entity of Willpower which created his kind. Ion'Nur understood his role and embraced it, afterwards he waged war against the Fernus Parallax and defeated him, purging every single infected Martian from Parallax virus but unfortunatelly the victims became violent White Martians. Millenias passed and White Martians worshipped Parallax as their God while Green Martians worshipped Ion as their God, as for the desendant reincarnations of Ion'Nur and Fernus Parallax, they are of course J'onn J'onzz and Ma'alefa'ak, both secretly carrying their ancestors names (J'onn=Ion and Malefice= Parallax). Malefice basically being reincarnated Fernus hoped to returning to his "true form" by destroying his planet and causing enough fear to transform as that's how Martians become Burning Martians, by succumbing to fear of fire, the rest is history.
