Twilight is looking sharp in this dress.Β
Like literally too, with the stars, the triple-edged mask and the cutie mark shoes. So pointy. I particularly like the shoes. I have always thought ponies looked great in these kind of extravagant horseshoes.
I like it when Twilight is formal, calm and collected. But every once in a while, it is nice to see her as being pert and jaunty; bold and sassy. Which I find her to appear as in this piece.Β Β
Compared to your last Twilight piece, this definitely looks a lot sleeker and more polished.
Also, the shading is not as heavy as in your last piece, which really makes her spring to life in comparison, or 'sparkle' if you will. And I really love it when Twilight sparkles.Β Β
Having looked at this for a while now, there are two things that stood out to me as mistakes. Β
First, is the star on the right side of Twilight's chest. From its positioning, it seems to me that the purple star should have been in the foreground and the silver one in the back. The silver star is a bit bigger than the purple one behind it, so I am assuming you accidentally drew it that way and then, when you realized, you just decided to deal and make the best of it.
Β Oh well.
Second, is the general way the dress is attached to Twilight. I am having a hard time figuring out, how this dress keeps itself in place. As far as I can see, the dress is attached around her neck, and could also possibly be attached around her torso behind the wings. But that would still not support the train of the dress and keep it off the ground. Maybe I am just overthinking things. Or maybe you just did like Rarity and "put some magic in the dress".Β Β
No matter what the case is, I would love to see more pony dresses from you, especially since you "love designing" them. And I am also sure you know that I am not pointing these things out to discourage you, but instead in the hope you will learn from it.Β Β

Well the first time i drew twilight and the one everyone loves is actually a piece i personally despise. That was my first ever time using sai and i wanted to use the painting tools so i made a character that could have big surfaces of color for me to use. I was actually almost not going to post it on here but decided to any way and i personally dislike how much attention it has gotten and a few times I have thought of taking it down. As for this one. I never noticed the star until you pointed it out =I bad on my part and as for how it attaches... well when i create a dress i make it in a side view first as a sketch to figure it all out and if you notice the piece of cloth behind her hind quarters, that is where the train is attached to which keeps is where it is and stops it from falling down. It was hard to think of where to put that piece because i felt that in the image it wouldn't be visible but i did put it in just for the reason that i had to be there for the thing to make sense. And yes I do love to design dresses. Its unique to think of a way that a dress could do on a pony and for different situations the only trouble is that i have other things to do and i don't get much time for it. You don't need to worry about discouraging me you wrote a giant critique that is much appreciated because you noticed some things that I hadn't and can help me grow better as an artist. Not saying that my art hasn't improved. I can tell just my looking at stuff from the spring to now and i'm like... =I damn... art is a never ending struggle of learning though and even the masters could always learn more. Its important to improve and if you don't have an open mind, not just on subject matter but also on opinions and people then you cant continue to grow. Not only as an artist but as a person as well. That's what I think anyway. Anyhow, thank you so much for your long comment and critique, it is very much appreciated and i'm glad you did so a midst all the people just saying... is good... =.=" Those are nice but... whats good about it? whats wrong with it? That who kind of thing I like to know. But then again being at an art school I have grown used to it. *sigh* anyhow thank you so much ^^

I shall tell you but you must keep it a secret... (I drew it small... like half the size of the canvas and then transformed it so that it was bigger and then colored it)

just make sure its very fine and clean when its small before you blow it up that way the transform distortion doesnt ruin it.

well i made sure that the pen i dont know exactly the size but i made it so that it covered at least 1/4 of the image when i was lining it.

Hmm... probly at the masqurade. I have a plan. Im thinking after Ryuma learns some spells a few days can pass and celestia and luna will be throwing the dance in canterlot. So that gets everyone gother and naturally they would be invited because they are royalty as well. Then proper plot can happen.
