Happy Pride Month, y’all!
This year I’m part of DeviantArt’s Pride Month celebration with this work! Having to choose one colour from the Pride Flag, I picked green because of course I did, so I developed a concept about Nature, the theme associated with the colour. You can use this as a cover art for your Eclipse profiles if you feel like going green too!
Here is the journal about the project:
30 Days of PrideDeviantArt is brighter and more diverse thanks to the many LGBTQ+ members that contribute to our vibrant community. Celebrate #30DaysOfPride with our Eclipse-friendly cover images and avatars, then join the conversation to get the #Pride2019 Profile badge!
Join DeviantArt in celebrating Pride Month! Eight artists have created Eclipse-friendly Pride-themed cover images and avatars, and we'll be featuring 30 LGBTQ+ artists throughout the month.
Around the globe, June is celebrated as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, with an outpouring of love, self-expression, confidence, and solidarity. Along with the many talented artists who call DeviantArt their home, we are proud to put forward our own celebration of the LGBTQ+ community for Pride!
Pride Month is a time t
I decided to portray nature not only as a setting for the model to interact with, but conceptually as human nature. The message I want to send is that no matter if we are attacked and get wounded, our nature is strong enough and it will blossom again despite the negativity: hence the arrows turning into flowers. I’ve also paid a direct tribute to LGBTQ+ culture referencing Saint Sebastian, who’s considered a gay icon : I’ve been wanting to tackle this subject for years, so I’m glad I had this occasion to give it my own spin and make a work that’s especially meaningful to me.
Of course, I managed to work House Tyrell into the mix (hint hint, the golden rose in his hand), mostly because I love that quote and I think it’s very appropriate for the theme of resilience I wanted to portray. You can read my journal about Margaery Tyrell as an LGBTQ+ icon to understand why I’m so passionate about her and House Tyrell in general as an LGBTQ+ viewer.
I did consider telling a tale of love in my photo for this project, but I ultimately decided to do something else: while I have often touched on LGBTQ+ themes or portrayed LGBTQ+ love and intimacy in my works, I wanted this to be different, make a clear statement, something to stop and think about.
I believe it’s important to make a statement about our inner strength and resilience at a time like this, when pretty much all minorities are being attacked on many fronts to create some public enemy that people in power can rally their supporters against, to create cohesion in their ranks. Even if we are made to feel isolated, when our own nature is the only thing we can be sure about and rely on, things will get better and we’ll get through strengthened and bring even more beauty to the world. I hope I managed to convey the message through the image!
If you’re interested, I’ve shared a few more thoughts on the subject both in the upcoming DeviantArt journal about Pride, and in this interview I gave for projecteducate .
So, my darlings: let’s all join together and celebrate Pride! We’re all part of this beautiful thing called mankind, and while each of us is different, our uniqueness does not make us enemies, it only strengthens and enriches this beautiful whole we’re all part of. Let’s get out there, speak up for ourselves and our loved ones, reclaim our peculiarity in spite of those who’d want to crush it to control us, and show the world that embracing who we and our fellow people truly are is the best way to go on into the future and create a world in which the only things there’s no room fore are hate, discrimination and enmity.
