Pardone moi, but check the Halo Encyclopedia. Latin names aside, Bungie clearly state's that they are Arthropods.

To me, I honestly think that the Halo 4 jackal looks like a cross between a Gears of War 3 Locust, A tyrannosaurus rex and a velociraptor. I like it though.
