Description
Ch. 12 Mother Sea
Christina followed her mother for quite a long distance until they came to a darker part of the sea where not many creatures dwelled and echoes of shallow souls roared. Christina swam close to her mother's side and moved her eyes in all directions to avoid being spooked by unknown sea creatures. Lenia swam slower as they approached a circle crater full of sunken ships that had certainly had their day. Many of them were decayed and rotten, some maintained their shape, but had many holes in them. Christina was frozen, "So that's where all the lost ships remain" she thought. Lenia swam around crevices and through gaps between broken masts while Christina followed. She stopped near a ship that was broken in two and had a shiny emblem on the side. Christina immediately recognized it as her father's crest when he was in the Southern Kingdom. Lenia touched it gracefully, avoiding her gaze upon Christina. "Your father was on this ship. It was my eighteenth birthday when I was allowed to explore the upper world. That night there was a horrible storm and I watched many men that were on this ship die. I thought I would be able to see their souls seep out of them and rise into the thunderous skies; instead, I watched them desperately seek air and life and punished with the horror of drowning. I couldn't let that happen to your father, I watched him struggle for dear life and I wanted to save him. So I did. I swam with all of my strength to bring him to land. There, above the rocky shore, I called to your mother. She lived in a convent at the time for an important reason. I called to her with my mind and she rushed to shore to save your father."
Christina couldn't take her eyes off Lenia and they continued to swim further into the ship until they approached an old treasure chest drenched with green and red algae. She unlocked the chest and out of it was some of her father's long lost treasures of gold and red stones. "The necklace I gave you was from this chest, your father's. I wore it when I transformed into a human. I wore it all the days I was upon land. I loved your father for a long time, very deeply, and he loved me in return… he almost married me." "But why didn't he if he loved you?" "Your mother bravely traveled to the Southern Kingdom to marry your father to prevent a great war. To form an alliance. Shortly, I found out I was pregnant with you. I thought it would have been good enough to keep me on land permanently, but I had to become one soul with your father, to marry him." Christina had never felt more sympathy for Lenia than she did in that moment. "Your Father and Margrethe wanted me to stay so I could raise you, but little did they know I was under a spell and I was about to die after I gave birth to you. Giving you up was a painful sacrifice, but I knew you would be safe in the upper world and you were in good hands. However, your mother saved my life. Without her blood, I couldn't have returned back to my world, back to the sea. I would have been foam…." Christina took her mother's hand and squeezed it lightly. Lenia pushed back her hair and gazed at her teary eyed daughter. "One thing I would never forget upon land was the feeling of human tears when I felt sad and lonely. It was a strange feeling, but it was new. I find it peculiar how even as a mermaid, you can shed tears." "You mean mermaids don't shed tears?" "We are not human darling. We do not possess souls that pity." Christina didn't know what not being able to cry felt like. It was something she could do whenever she felt she needed to. "My… mother was brave wasn't she?" Lenia smiled, "I am grateful to her for many things. It is a shame we never spent much time together… but if we did, they would be the greatest joy of my 300 years." Lenia shut the chest and swam out of the ship. Christina followed suit, but was gathering more questions in her mind, missing Margrethe more. She felt a bit of a cramp in her waist and thought it was guilt because of the deep memories that lied within her to remember her land mother.
"So, how did you become human?" Lenia winced at the reminiscence; she felt the stinging knives in her tail that existed long ago that split her tail in two. "Well, it was a difficult decision, not meant to be taken lightly you know." "Like mine?" "Yes, very much so. I went to a woman who seemed to be rebellious against the idea of the split world between humans and the sea. She gave me a powerful potion that could split my legs and give me a human form. But I had a great payment. I had to sacrifice the most important thing… my voice." "So you never could speak to anyone or anything?" "Not a soul. I had to talk with my eyes and my body. It was a challenge I had to accept. Your father seemed most keen to that. I seemed to understand him better than anyone." Lenia looked at her daughter. "You are blessed my darling, because you are born with a mother mermaid and a human father. You are born of both worlds. That is why you are a legend in the sea. You are the first creature to unite both worlds for the first time in ages."
Christina decided to return to the ship Lenia brought her to so she could explore the sunken ship. As a human, she had never seen so much ruin. She felt cold in the darker waters and chills spread up her spine as she swam into other dark parts of the ship. "What a strange feeling to be swimming in the ruins that I know so much about." As she opened up various treasure chests and dug under green algae, she found plenty of leftover skeletons of rotting sailors and their rotting flesh. Then she turned around to collect some gold droppings and her nose tracked a whiff of something peculiar... She quietly twisted her tail and felt her blood run cold. Amidst of the darkness she sharply turned her head, realizing she was being watched by a predator with yellow eyes. She heard swishing of the water and slowly emerged a large barracuda with teeth that shined without the light. Christina's heart began to race and she slowly swam backwards and then charged once she was underneath an opening out to the deck of the ship. The barracuda began his pursuit after its precious prey gnashing his teeth turning the corners of his mouth into a devilish smile. Christina, frightened at the beastly creature, swam with all her energy, panting and releasing bubbles like an underwater volcano. The barracuda, striped in black with a tint of dark green increased its daring speed until something rushed past him! It was Madaget and his eyes were a flaming orange and he charged to Christina and knocked her on his back and Christina grasped the reins. "Go Madaget! Let's get away! Now!" she yelled. Madaget twisted his body to make a sharp U-turn and went head first toward the barracuda. The barracuda remained relentless and narrowed his eyes on Madaget. Christina clutched the reins even more tightly, trying to pull Madaget ina different direction. "Madaget, turn away! He's heading toward us! Listen to me!" Madaget ignored her and as they approached the barracuda, with his eyes brightening in color and his razor teeth snapping all the while, and then when he was just at the right distance, Madaget made a sharp turn again and his tail smacked the barracuda's jaws! The hit was so powerful that the barracuda lost consciousness as it swirved and his yellow eyes rolled in dizzy circles. Madaget smacked his head against the barracuda's, almost knocking Christina off of him, and the barracuda's eyes closed and he went belly up, floating downward into the sea floor, where he hit into the clouds of sand and out of visibility. Christina caught her breath and Madaget whinnied under the water and his eye color changed to a calming green. Christina slowly guided him away from the barracuda's fall and stopped near a coral forest.
The coral forest had a massive reef filled with corals of red, orange and beige with branches that were of all sorts of lengths to hide the smaller sea creatures. She got off of Madaget and pet his side and gently massaged his head and kissed it sweetly. "You are my hero my dear friend," she smiled. "And you are my friend too," there was a strange voice in Christina's head. "Wait, Madaget, am i talking to you?" she thought. "Yes, you have earned my trust and I have earned yours since I have the instincts of protection." "Wow! What a cool talent!" she said happily. "Now that our bond is stronger, I can sense you anywhere anytime. I can feel how you feel. It is wonderful," he whinnied in return. "Do you know where the mermaids come from?" he asked Christina, as if it were a test of her understandings of the lore and legends she was told. "I always believed in them. I thought they existed on their own. I was told how humans came from mermaids, but I never suspected where the mermaids came from." She answered truthfully. "Once upon a time there was a large fish and she was quite an outcast from her friends. She liked the idea of leaping into the sky and crashing back into the water. All her friends wanted to do was make eggs and migrate. Well this didn't suit her, so she went to an old cavern one day and found a trapped Sword fish that glowed brightly. She saved him and the Swordfish turned into a great enchanter! He was so grateful for her efforts to save him that he granted her one wish. She wanted to be beautiful unlike her friends and be able to reach into the sky and dive back into the sea all day. So he transformed her, giving her a long slender body and arms so she could reach. And from then on, she was happy and became the first ruler of the sea. That's how the first mermaid came about." Christina was marveled at this idea and thought of Lenia and how she desired to visit the heavens.
Madagét's eyes still glowed of bright gold and Christina hugged him. "You are part of a beautiful world now Christina, and I will always be by your side and help you explore all of it!" he whinnied happily.
