I think they used the robberfly as a model in Jeff Goldbloom's horror movie, THE FLY. Love this!

wow, that's just amazing how sharp you can make it from so close. anyways, just curious, are these bugs dead when you pic em since the light envriroment and that kinda stuff just seems impossible if they would be alive.

my models are always alive...
in this case, the environment is a windowsill
the thing didn't find the way out by itself, but i took it outside after the shoot

Goddamn, this was one of the most awesome macros I've seen in a long time.
I am really impressed with your homemade macro-setup. I just recently heard about reversing the lens for closer macros, and it sounds very cool. Maby I don't need to invest in a Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro to get sweet macros then?

Smart move to use two photos to increase depth of focus, that's using the old noodle

Wow, this is one of the best macros I've ever seen. Technically perfect...and nice subject. Clever idea to put them together like that to increase depth of field. Still it is amazing that it works. Even if you're using a tripod, it must be tricky to get two shots that fit perfectly.

graemo In reply to marble911 [2004-08-11 22:54:05 +0000 UTC]

thanks, i'm quite happy with this too
i don't use a tripod, since i don't have a macro rail, but i was resting the front of the lens on the windowsill to avoid shake, and it's quite easy to move the plane of focus this way
i just wish i'd managed a 3rd shot for the middle of the eye...

marble911 In reply to graemo [2004-08-12 10:41:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it's a bit soft in the middle of the eye, but I'd not worry about that. You're such a perfectionist!

HOLY CRAP HOLY COW THAT'S A BIGGIE ...THAT'S A WOW ...i suppose yer gonna tell me you DON'T have a stock account

You don't realize they are that hairy /furry...i almost want to pet it.

Assuming it's alive..how did you get 2 shots off before it moved ? AnD on ...white background? ...i'm so

Nice job hero.....

sometimes i pee when i laugh

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

graemo In reply to Fangfingers [2004-08-07 13:45:53 +0000 UTC]

it is alive, but it was trapped behind a window and therefore was tired and slow
the white background is the windowsill

i got 2 (and more) shots, because the shot itself doesn't frighten an insect, so they mostly move when you advance, but once they have tolerated the presence of the lens, they are not budged by a soft click
sometimes they shrink back from the flash a bit, but they don't seem to regard it as a major threat

no, i don't have a stock account, why should i?
most manips here on DA are crap anyway...

Thought for the day : ... Well, how are they expected to get better without clever stock ?

"how are they expected to get better without clever stock?"

thought for eternity: you don't need clever stock for good ideas and skillful technique...
(and people who do, should better bury themselves instead of hopelessly attempting to produce ART)
