Description Phyt, the little Ookochu boy from Encounter in the Woods (and Chaau's future boyfriend, many years after this scene) playing with one of his friends in his home village.  The two are pretending to be great warriors from rival tribes meeting in battle, dueling with their toy spears until the heroic Jee (their tribe, they're taking turns for who gets to be the hero) at last vanquishes his villainous rival.  They're having a blast trying to mimic the crazy fighting moves they've heard stories about, and the loser milks his "death" scene for all its worth (while trying to one up what the other did when he lost last time).

Not sure what the friend's name is, but I'm leaning toward Lac or Lacoy.

EDIT:  Oh!  Just realized not everyone might recognize Phyt.    Phyt is on the left, Lacoy is on the right.

So, who's going to win?

Well they're going back and forth, though I think Phyt's gonna win this round.

Which one is Phyt?

The one on the left with the pinkish loincloth.

I see. Are these two more or less evenly-matched?

Gralegio In reply to Aristodes [2018-01-09 00:31:41 +0000 UTC]

I think so.  Plus, they're just friends horsing around anyway so even if one is a lot better than the other he'd let his friend win now and then just to keep the game going.

Cool. So, do all young male ookochu (spelling?) train like this?

Probably not all, but a lot of them.

Well, what do the others do?

Probably play other stuff.    Not everybody wants to be a warrior or hunter when they grow up, after all.

Do young females ever train like this?

Do they call all of the males up to fight if there's a war or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gralegio In reply to Aristodes [2018-01-09 00:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Not necessarily.

I've always imagined the Ookochu as living in a sort of Feudal system, so you have a King or Queen (a Paramount Chief) to whom Clan Chiefs swear loyalty, and below them the town/village chieftains.  At every level there's a group of warriors who've sworn themselves to that chief.  So, when the King or Queen needs to call up an Army they call the Clan Chiefs, who call the chiefs below them, and everybody calls up their warriors.

If they need to call up all the males the King or Queen can do that, but that's for extreme situations.  In a way, its like the difference today between the professional Army and when they call a Draft.

Sounds way too organized for a tribal system. They'd need at least some sort of legal system to implement all that. And there really seems to be no need for an intermediate clan chief between a king and the village chiefs without some sort of system necessitating it. In feudal Europe, the land was (largely) divided between Kings, higher nobles (Dukes, Counts, etc), and lower nobles (Barons, petty lords, individual knights to a degree) because each one owed service to the ones above them, and the land had to be subdivided in order to support the forces needed to provide that service, such as granting knights a piece of land from which they could draw the income needed to afford their horses, armor, weapons, etc.

All of this wasn't as simple as it seemed, and legal documents were core to establishing who owed who and what. There's a reason tribal cultures don't have so many tiers to them; it just isn't possible without some sort of civilized framework.

Both are male? One has a pink loincloth, which is usually associated with females.

Gralegio In reply to Aristodes [2017-07-30 21:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, both are male.    You can tell because most males have the head-spikes and stripes while most females don't.

Pink being associated with females is actually a VERY recent thing.  Until the 20th Century there were no colors associated with males or females, it was a concept invented in America and Europe around World War I.  And even then, it was originally the other way around:  pink was for boys, blue was for girls.  It only switched to what we think now because of a popular advertising campaign right after World War II.  (Yay for history!)

The Ookochu drawings and stories are pretty much all set way before any of that, so don't be surprised to see male characters wearing pink from time to time.

Gralegio In reply to DragonSnake9989 [2017-07-30 20:29:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes.  ^_^

And actually, this picture is probably not too long after the war (or, is during the tail-end of it).  Phyt and Chaau are around the same age, and were both born around the time the war started (Chaau a little before, and Phyt a little after).  Phyt lives far away from the fighting, though, and the war never really comes to his sleepy out of the way village.  By the time Phyt and Chaau meet as teenagers, the war has been over for around ten years.

Geez, I should really post a timeline a something.
