Commission drawn and colored by
drew a set of characters for a convention game that I plan on running soon. I'm currently doing a playtest for it. This is the second out of six characters. The campaign is a combination of RIFTS, DND, Eberron, Final Fantasy, Deadlands, and Miyazaki. This character is an "elementalist" - a combination of sorceress and warlock. She's actually been combined-fused with an elemental, which is where her powers come from.
ERISSA MONROE
Background/History: Erissa Monroe was the illegitimate child of a princeling from the Morgan family and a maidservant. Her father was usually absent and when he was present, he treated her and her mom with indifference, shame, or abuse. Her childhood was unsurprisingly quite unhappy, with few friends and little schooling. She grew up expected to follow her mother's footsteps, but fate had other plans.
House Morgan focused on elemental magic and unlocked an arcane secret: bonding an elemental creature with that of a human. The process was physically, mentally, and emotionally excruciatingly painful for the subject- with the subject effectively merging personalities (House Castellamonte would argue that their souls are entwined, but House Morgan has little patience for such quaint superstitions). Due to the difficulty and cost of performing the ritual, House Morgan began to incentivize recruits among the desperate and low-born.
Her mom was desperate for money, her father wanted to be rid of the embarrassment, and her siblings were happy to see her gone; therefore, Erissa became the perfect candidate. She not only survived the procedure but thrived thereafter. For the first time in her life, she enjoyed power and respect from her so-called betters. She underwent an extensive training program to teach her how to harness the magic within her, keep the elemental at bay, and how to conduct herself in society without scaring too many people. Her handlers even finished her education.
While out on a mission for her house, she lost control after being subjected to jeers from a drunken mob- and received a warning: the next time she lost control she would be stripped of her powers and sent off to work in the mana mines. This incentive has kept her restrained within the borders of Iron Heart. When the time came to appoint a new generation of Iron Champions, House Morgan happily volunteered her as she was an unpredictable asset.
Personality/Motivation: Erissa's personality changed because of the fire elemental bond. The abused submissive was replaced by a confident if resentful woman with a big chip on her shoulder. She does have a fiery temper, only restrained by her fear of losing her powers and newfound status. She is a pyromaniac; but tends to only indulge in it when she can avoid any negative consequences.
She finds the Sentinel and Techomancer to be tiresome due to their "honor" and naivite, respectively. She respects the Scout but doesn't entirely trust her (and is even a little jealous). She gets along best with the Life Warden and the Spirit Blade due to their shared cynicism of humanity (even if she's happy to challenge the Life Warden's religious beliefs). She fights with the Iron Champions because she has to NOT because she wants to.
Quote: "Even in darkness I burn and in time so will you."
Powers/Tactics: Erissa starts off battle by activating her Fire Aura and Mage Armor. If Endurance is a concern, she will turn off her Fire Aura. She uses Control Flame on existing fires or Fireball against groups of enemies. If she's at high endurance, she will use Firebolt against tough enemies and Firestorm against low DCV enemies. She can use Wall of Fire to control enemies and limit their movement (or protect allies), and Withering Heat if nonlethal force is advised.
She is something of a glass cannon, so she typically hangs in the back- unless she's dealing with enemies that use fire. She can even use her own fire attacks to activate her Absorb Flames power if there is enough time or opportunity.
Appearance: Erissa stands at average height for a woman with a slender build, resembling an artist or a socialite. She looks to be in her early 20s. She wears red and gold dresses with short sleeves, along with matching gloves and heeled boots. Her skin has an orange hue, her hair cascades down her back, and she carries herself with confidence. When she activates her magic, her eyes become orange flames along with her hair; and her skin becomes red- revealing her hybrid nature of human and elemental.
