Description Fledgling superhero Mara Silverman (the Feline Fatale) decided she and her partner (on the streets and in the bedroom), Darci Lynn Baker (the Crimson Cat) needed a night out. So, she dragged a reluctant Darci Lynn to the neighborhood bar.

"D'you really think we should be taking the night off?" Darci Lynn asked. "And is wearing your ears with civilian clothes a good idea?"

"Yes, I think it's a fantastic idea, pretty kitty," Mara replied. "And my ears are no worse than you wearing your choker, babe. Anyway, this is important. I realized you know practically everything about me and I barely know anything about you. So, we're gonna have a few drinks and you're gonna tell me all about your sexy self."

"W-what do you want to know?"

"I don't know. How about your family? You never talk about your family."

"I-I don't have any family."

"You...you don't?

"No," Darci Lynn answered. "I was left at a fire station when I was a baby."

"Oh, babe, that's awful! I'm so sorry. But you got adopted, right? Everyone wants to adopt babies."

"Not me. For whatever reason, nobody wanted me. I grew up in the foster care system until I eventually aged out of it."

"Oh...oh, hon..."

"I...umm...I used to tell the other kids my mom and dad were superheroes, and they loved me, but they had to give me up because some villain could try to hurt me to get at them. I'd tell them that when I got my powers and was able to defend myself, they'd come back and we'd fight evil as a family."

"Oh...oh, my gosh. Darci...is...is that why you..."

"What...why I'm a superhero?" Darci Lynn replied. "No, Mara. I'm not a kid anymore, and I'm certainly not delusional."

"Sorry, babe, I didn't mean... So, what was foster care like? Is it as bad as they say?"

"Where do you think I learned to take a punch? Actually, it depended on the family. Some were really nice. Others...well, I was eleven the first time I was molested. There was nothing I could do about it. For years, there was nothing I could do about it. But now, I can."

"Oh, shit. Oh, Darci, my God, I'm so sorry."

"You want to know why I want to be a superhero, even though I'm not a very good one? It's because of the Small Things. Superheroing is made up of Big Things and Small Things. The A-Listers and B-Listers get wrapped up in the Big Things: alien invasions, arch enemies, natural disasters...the flashy stuff. But they lose sight of the Small Things. You want me to hang up my ears and be your Lois Lane. But if I do, who's going to walk Miss Weissman home when she has to make a late-night trip to the delicatessen? Who's going to track down Mr. Garrett and make sure he gets home safely when he decides to wander away from home? W-who's going to sit with their arm around the little boy who just...who just watched his father shoot his mother then turn the gun on himself, waiting for the police to arrive? Punchfist? The Raptor? Glory Gal? You?"

"Darci...you...you did all that?"

"And more...because nobody else will. And you know what? The Small Things aren't small to the people in need. The Small Things are huge to them. It may not make the news...but it matters. Sometimes, superheroes don't need to be able to lift a truck or...or punch a hole in a tank. Sometimes...sometimes they just need to be there."

"Darci, I...I'm so sorry. I was such an asshole. I told you that you didn't measure up to "real" superheroes. But I had it all wrong. You're the one the rest of us need to live up to. You're the best of us, babe. Can you forgive me?"

"There's nothing to forgive, Mara. But maybe you can...umm...drop all the talk about me hanging up my costume?"

"I'll never say another word about it, babe, I swear. However..."

"However?"

"However, we're gonna go all in on your superhero career. Fight training, costume upgrade, social media presence...the whole shebang! And a catchphrase! This is gonna be so great!"

"Mara, I...I can't afford all that stuff."

"Don't you worry about it, pretty kitty. I've got it all figured out!"
