Introduction
The New Dominion’s fourth naval construction project was no less ambitious precursor as it was focused on addressing the lack of a reliable frigate in the navy’s arsenal. When the time came for it to be the focus of the still-recovering naval warship construction industry, the New Dominion had a few good options on hand. There were surviving examples of the Opili-Keluso which was the Old Dominion’s somewhat infamous stealth frigate. Then there was the Mizaruajii-Keluso, which had its own reputation for racking up ship-to-ship kills in the civil war to a point that the usurpers actually issued bounties on particularly successful crews. Last but not least was the T’rackon-Keluso, which for lack of a better descriptor was the ‘vanilla’ frigate of the bunch. There was the temptation to simply make something entirely new since all three designs had flaws and merits but the existing examples were deteriorating with age and the effects of centuries of patchwork repairs. It was first decided that the Opili was not practical because the production of its stealth features was not possible due to a lack of critical materials unique to it. Production difficulties and political resistance to its use saw that it was a rare sight back during the height of the old Dominion’s power. While the latter issue wasn’t a current issue, the production problems were worse now than they were in the past. Mizaruajii-Keluso while an excellent candidate but, very few examples survived the Kujaxiid. The few that were operating had already demonstrated an irreconcilable level of stress-fatigue and replacement parts for their engines were simply unavailable. The few that had not started to fall apart dramatically where converted back to freighters specializing as mobile botany ships. This left the T'rakon-keluso frigate, and it too had noticeable shortcomings that had to be solved.
To properly understand the difficulties that the T’rakon-keluso frigate suffered one must know how old the design is. The T’rakon-keluso was first introduced into service in 2090 AEC, making it five-hundred and twenty-six years old as of this writing. As far as starships go it was an enduring antique that unfortunately never had its core design flaws addressed. It was originally build as a general purpose frigate with an eye on mass-production and in of that some corners were cut. An upside to this is that it was the most numerous vessels in the frigate category on both sides of the civil war and was still the most numerous frigates in the Kujaxiid. Hundreds if not thousands of T’rakon-kelusos travelled between the stars of which meant there were copious amounts of spare parts. Hundreds of thousands of dock personnel were familiar with the ship and knew exactly how to keep it operational and beyond that almost every starship dock in the nation could manage to berth and work on the T'rakon. This also meant turnaround times for this craft for any sort of damage it might have received was lightning fast. But then there were the downsides to the vessel. The T'rakon-keluso fell victim to the politics of being numerous, as it came to be treated as utterly expendable. At the worst point in its service life perfectly repairable vessels were being sent to be broken down instead of being repaired. This was because of a thoroughly incorrect belief by the Mteskovcor Party that it was cheaper to replace than repair an asset they deemed expendable. Another flaw with the design was its anemic armament. T'rakon-keluso never received weapons upgrades at any point in its prior service to address the problem. The last issue with vessels of the type was a major engineering design flaw. T'rakon-keluso frigates suffered from inadequately fortified stern structures. More vessels of the type had their sterns blown off in combat or torn off while under hard maneuvers or while at faster-than-light speeds than anyone cared to admit. It was once estimated that about fifty percent of all T'rakon frigates would be heavily damaged under hard sub-light maneuvers due to structural failures in the stern. The actual number of loses due to weak stern structures is unknown because the records are unclear. But many a commanding officer of a T’rakon-keluso is very familiar with the particular wail of a structural integrity alarm warning that the stern was dangerously stress-fatigued. Wise commands would often get modifications to their ships to move weapons mounts, equipment and personnel out of the stern entirely leaving only the critical automation. This was a stopgap to solve what became a frequent killer of crewmembers on ships of the type and it was never officially acknowledged or remedied. It is now suspected that elements of the Mteskovcor Party intentionally fabricated records regarding this problem and funneled contracts to their lackeys to keep making the ship with its glaring flaw. In short in resurrecting the T'rakon-keluso, the New Dominion had a whole lot of work to do.
Capabilities
This is where the Nyeru-keluso comes into the picture and, and it is best thought of as an entirely new vessel that outwardly resembles the original. The T’rakon-keluso’s schematics were studied in fine detail from varied angles and minutiae such as the finest molecular welds to the tiniest self-forging stem bolts and molecular rivets were considered with utmost scrutiny. The design that resulted just a few short years later was a masterpiece of warship architecture. The new Frigate resembled the old one mostly, but it was heavier than the original by a hundred thousand imperial mass units. It was also fifty percent larger than the original as well, and this was enough to warrant an entirely new name. Its new features push the boundaries of what can be called a frigate, but this was not all. Numerous improvements were incorporated into the new frigate such as the inclusion of vector shielding technology. The hull of the ship carries an improved quality of hull plating and additionally reinforced internal structures all address key survivability issues with the original. This also includes a completely redesigned stern and part of this process was a complete overhaul of the ships propulsion. The engines were greatly improved by the overhaul which changed the shape and appearance of the stern section dramatically. All the sub-light propulsion systems were upgraded to the modern helical flow ZAR propulsion systems allowing the new ship to accelerate faster than with the original's high-efficiency ion drives. But perhaps the best came last as the weapons array.
The weapons systems on the Nyeru-keluso are remarkable unto themselves, as they are a heavily revised weapons configuration from the Mizaruajii-keluso with updates for the known threats in the galaxy. Due to this fact one could say that the Nyeru-keluso is the offspring of both the T’rakon-Keluso and the Mizaruajii-keluso frigate with the best traits of both. It got the performance of the latter and the teeth and hunting skills of the former. For those who are not familiar, the Mizaruajii-keluso was a Marauder-frigate best known for two Light 12M DRAIL and four Mark IV AGML banks supported by thirty-six Mark II AMP-Anti-Ship Missile launchers. The ship was notorious for assaulting cruisers, battleships in packs and pummeling them to death on the first pass. One Mizaruajii-keluso was trouble, but more were a death sentence for the target. The Nyeru-keluso continues this although not as fast as either of its precursor vessels. The ship’s primary armament is composed of; four Model L9U DRAIL and, eight Model 480 AGML mounted in a similar fashion to the Mizaruajii-keluso for maximized firing arc and effect. The ship’s secondary armament is six Mark II improved AMP-Anti-Ship Missile launchers. Effectively, the Nyeru-keluso is better armed and armored than its precursors and can deliver damage at the same generous ranges. For point defense the ship is armed with forty-four retracting combined weapons turrets each of which bears a HSP-PD3 AGML and a Mark I Point Defense Autoglaive. Effectively this means the point defense capabilities of the craft have not changed too much and the range at which the point defense can reach out to slap missiles, torpedoes or fighters is greater. None of these weapons rely on ammunition so that has simplified the ships ability to endure long battles.
Addendum
There have been design proposals to alter the ship’s armament and swap its forty small craft for fighters but no actions have been taken to implement this.
