Description
Encounter ID: 031-06094-AB “MCLXV” Threat Level: Ingosari
No one is entirely sure precisely where the entity only referring to itself as MCLXV came from or how it came to appear within on the computer systems of communication relay satellites near the borders of Dominion territory. Just a few months ago the digital entity made itself known when it appears as a graphic on a maintenance engineer’s screen as she tried to ascertain what the malfunction was in the computer systems of a communications relay. The entity appears as a text-based picture that mimicked the appearance of the array itself; the maintenance engineer’s assigned ship and then the Maintenance engineer herself. We soon discovered that it was learning rapidly, and soon was communicating to us in snippets of audio using galactic Unicode. Original communications were essentially like the below transcript.
Arria Cherifi: “Can you tell us your name?”
MCLXV: “I..you…we.. what…then…your..”
Arria Cherifi: “Do you have a name?”
MCLXV: “Then…now…question…M…C…L…X…V”
Arria Cherifi: “Your name is MCLXV?”
MCLXV: “Is NoT NoRmAl?”
Arria Cherifi: “Uh, no but if it is what you like…”
MCLXV: “Is…what…you…like.”
The entity calling itself MCLXV seemed at the time to use duplicated snippets of the words of those it was communicating with to reply. There was considerable lag in the early days in the spaces between words indicating perhaps the entity was communicating over a great distance with limits imposed by stellar phenomena. Arria Cherifi’s conversation with MCLXV was the first coherent one although the entity had apparently been attempting to communicate for several years prior. Often the early communications were taken to be some juvenile’s attempts to hack government computers. Considering that its early attempts were ignored or viewed with suspicion it’s a miracle the entity didn’t give up communicating. As time went on communications became more frequent and its communications became more coherent and eventually it was attempting to speak.
Arria Cherifi: “Can you hear me?
MCLXV: “HeAr…YeS, cLeAr SpEaK?”
Arria Cherifi: “Yes I understand you, what do you wish to speak about this time?”
MCLXV: “CrImInAlS.”
Arria Cherifi: “Criminals? That’s an odd topic what sort of criminals?”
MCLXV: “ H…h…H… DeEp SpAcE.”
As of this point Arria Cherifi in prior conversations had never spoken of the Hulegu, and it seems that MCLXV can only speak to any given person using prior language from that person. The entity tried several times to refer to the problematic Hugegu species which was believed to have gone extinct. It has to be noted that it is thought that the Hulegu went extinct due to the same Oo’Ol virus that killed most if not all sapient life in the galaxy. To date there have been no sightings of the Hulegu, no discoveries of their derelict ships and no planetary sites of their civilization.
Arria Cherifi: “You seem to be stuck there…let’s try something. The thing that you are referring to, they are criminals in deep space?”
MCLXV: “YeS…hOmE uNsEeN.”
Arria Cherifi: “Hmm do you know any other words in association with them?”
MCLXV: “yEs…GaLaTiA.”
Arria Cherifi: “Oh! You mean the Hulegu…the space pirates?”
MCLXV: “yEs….KnOw NeXt TaRgEt…”
Arria Cherifi: “They’ve not hit Galatia though.”
MCLXV: “NeXt TaRgEt!”
It is at this point that we realized what MCLXV might be. In the old Itanyii Empire, there were Artificial Intelligence operated extremely long ranged vessels sent into the far flung parts of the galaxy. These vessels were sent to observe and report back and they served as a sort of early warning system as well as a means of pre-surveying and cataloging the galaxy. MCLXV wasn’t likely some strange alien trying to communicate, but something possibly a bit more normal. Information about MCLXV was then sent to the ZSV, whom began to try and trace the source of the communications. The Galatia referred to by MCLXV was an Itanyii Empire colony and ‘Galatia’ wasn’t its actual name was Tessalit. The colony was wiped out by the Oo’Ol virus and is a mass grave for thousands of colonists who never had a chance. MCLXV seems to be operating on old information, though with the Oo’Ol you never know for sure. Arria Cherifi tried for another ten minutes to get MCLXV to mention specifics of any sortto try and help the ZSV. Instead all he could obtain from the entity was a repeat message.
MCLXV: “”
It was not until Arria Cherifi hot wired additional power into several arrays that finally MCLXV answered. The nature of the communication however has been classified as have all subsequent communications.
Addendum: 1
The ZSV did finally manage to ascertain where MCLXV was transmitting from, and it would seem to be a location not far off the path we took during the Kujaxiid. There is no telling how long it has been trying to call out to us and for how long we simply did not notice or disregarded it. A specialized mission is being assembled to go the site of where MCLXV seems to be transmitting from, but time seems urgent, MCLXV may be dying. As of late it has been presenting a new error message one that reads as the following.
MCLXV: “”
