Description Just some fangirl silliness, made as a background slide for my desktop. I wasn't even sure I liked the idea until I got to the coloring stage, and was able to add the blush to grayorca's face.

Brought to you in part by my finding this "I'm Too Sexy" video featuring Knock Out: [link]

I really love KO ! I didn't know that OC before that drawing, I really love it

He's not my OC so much as my redesign (as he's based on a copywritten character). But thank you.

Knock Out of Transformers Prime.

Thanks.

Wow, that character is very nice. You did your orca version so well !

Is the other orca an OC of yours? She's very pretty, I love her freckles and coloring. Knockout however is such a charming flirt even as an orca. lol I love how you keep subtle details in their designs like Knockout's red ring in his optics and his little goatee. It's just perfect

grayorca In reply to Fluffah [2013-02-01 18:03:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The other orca I refer to as grayorca, is the 'feral' form of myself I use by way of representation. That's what I mean when I say "fangirl silliness" by having her coincidentally run into Knockout.

Thank you.

If I may explain, the thing I've quickly discovered with orcafying these guys is just to keep some of their most-apparent features incorporated into their designs - rather than find a place and reason for every given facet (animals with limbs [dogs, cats, horses] that's easier to do because there's a place to put additional cues and make them look as though they're wearing the armor). Orcas don't give you the same freedom if you want to stay somewhat-true to reality.

In KO's case, the optics, his goatee, and the shape of his eyepatches (taken from the overall side-on look of his helmet; including his little 'ears') were the first things I thought to include in his concept sketch. The curving shape of his jawline is taken from looking at how his face is 'framed'. The lines of his saddlepatch are loosely based on those glowing ones his robot form has. And so on.

I agree with what you say, it's a lot easier to make animal forms of TFs when they're at least land based, it makes it harder to design them as something with no legs and very subtle differences to distinguish each individual

You really put a lot of thought into this then, I knew you must have because I'll admit it's not that easy to redesign a character into something completely different. I had attempted myself to draw them as orcas because I love the idea of combining two of the things I love most, but then I see yours and they just blew me out of the water.

...No pun intended. Heh XD

grayorca In reply to Fluffah [2013-02-02 18:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. And it's not something everyone has the patience and/or experience for. Usually for the reason they think of orcas as all being carbon-copies of each other, without variation.

Originally, my intent was to 'orcafy' only TFP Starscream, being he is my all-time favorite (and most of the rules I established in determining his markings are the same guidelines I now follow in redesigning the others). At first, I didn't think I could find the patience and enthusiasm necessary to do the same for the other characters, and thought it would be a disservice if I were to force myself to, at the peril of coming up with some displeasing look for characters not necessarily to my own liking. The fact that you and other fans have shown such a keen interest in Knock Out's redesign, being my third well-thought-out redesign attempt (after SS and Barricade), is what made me seriously consider, "Hey, it's clear I'm not the only one who really likes this crossover now. Why not give the rest of the 'Cons a try?"

Fluffah In reply to grayorca [2013-02-02 23:58:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! Which is totally untrue since they all have subtle difference just like humans.

Starscream is one of my favs too, but you can't stop at just one! Especially in Prime where pretty much everyone has a rad design.

You're really not! And I hope even more people discover they like this crossover too. It's definitely an interesting one and I've been waiting a while now to see if anyone would do a crossover with Transformers and cetaceans.

If you don't mind would it be okay if I try to design some of the others? Like Optimus and maybe some of the Autobots? That is of course if you don't want to and would not mind me trying c:

grayorca In reply to Fluffah [2013-02-03 00:19:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes.

Indeed. I can honestly say, for the whole of TFP's cast, there is no design I don't like, much less hate. I know some people take issue with the fact that Prime is so stylistically different from G1. But to be honest, for as many incarnations of Transformers as there are, at this point, each new generation has to be its own thing to some degree. And in my opinion, you can't really compare Prime to G1 and expect to entertain kids today with what entertained kids in the 80s. That may be fine for some, but the show has to be pliable enough for everyone to find something they like about it.

...I digress.

I was aware of a few TF mermaids, and some Beast Wars-esqe cetacean OCs. But nothing quite to the degree I've taken it.

No, I don't mind. Go right ahead. I'd be very interested to see those. I know ~Angelorca6109 is in the process of putting together some Autobot-orcas, but as far as I know, hers to be based on G1 'Bots.

Oh those people are called geewuners because they're blinded with nosalgia and can't see that the newer series have merit too

actually I don't see much merit in G1 at all because it's silly as fuck and I don't see how anyone can take it seriously

Oh I know there are mermechs but I've never seen dolphin or orcaformers like you see with dragons, wolves, cats and everything else lol

Ah yeah her, she came to my profile yesterday and demanded I unfavorite everything of hers because of my stamp collection

I'll probably be doing designs for Prime and TFA though since those are my favorite series :3

grayorca In reply to Fluffah [2013-02-03 03:43:32 +0000 UTC]

I see. I give the G1 series credit for laying the foundation for what eventually led to the live-action movies and TFP. But that's about it.

First time for everything. And to be honest, it was seeing TFs readapted as dogs/cats, horses, etc. so many times over that made me think, "Okay, what hasn't been done yet?"

I noticed.

Noted. Do whatever you please with whichever series you like best.

Expressions are sometimes all I can do well. Even if the coloring is half the effort I usually put into it.

Thank you.

You're welcome

The colouring and shading in this once is very nice as well so it's a win/win (Especially the motion bubbles near his pecs)

Can't help but think the light on KO's back looks chalky-white, though.

Bubbles are my cure-all, it seems, too. Next to adding murk and lightrays to the surrounding water.

AkelahNaih In reply to grayorca [2013-02-01 03:57:20 +0000 UTC]

I don't find it too light, just seems like they are close to the surface

I agree, I always add too many bubbles, but they are so fun to paint in

Love it, KO why u have to be such a romancer?!

you know what, I can imagine someone placing a mirror in the water and seeing KO swooning over himself for hours.

grayorca In reply to SergeanTrooper [2013-01-31 22:32:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

So very possible. That was kind of the idea with "Flaunt" but I got lazy when it came to adding his reflection to the water's surface.

I'm working on lining/coloring Breakdown at the moment. Maybe the mirror idea for KO will be next.

Thank you.

As I said, it was the detail of the pink blush I wanted to try adding. Or otherwise this painting probably never would have been. It's amazing how the inspiration for such projects can seem to hinge on one detail alone.

I know what you mean - the drawing of Ano offering kikami a fish was purely drawn as an excuse to try to paint a heart bubble xD

You won't. I am one of the endangered 'disciplined' fangirls, who does not cross themselves or their genes with that of fictional characters. Scenes like these are as close as one comes to it.

Thank you.
