Description

Fandral

First Appearance: Journey Into Mystery #119 (August 1965)

Fandral was considered the most cunning and skilled of the Warriors Three.  Something of a rogue with a captivating wit, the soldier had more than made a name for himself in the quest to restore the Odinsword, personally holding back the troll hordes attempting to board their ship on the Sea of Fear with his peerless fencing prowess.  These skills with a sword were more than a match for any would-be challenger in the nine realms, and this, alongside his famously handsome and debonair looks, made him one of the most eligible bachelors in Asgard, earning him the title of Fandral the Dashing.

His bravado and charm belied a hidden lack of confidence, however.  Fandral was not of royal blood unlike most who served the All-Father, born to a widow farmer who tended a small field on the Plains of Ida on the outskirts of the golden city.  Though he knew his friends would love him no matter where he came from, Fandral never quite felt like he belonged, and gave nearly all of his riches to his mother so that she might live the life he felt she deserved.

Like Volstagg, Fandral sacrifices himself during Ragnarok to save his mother.

The second of our Warriors' Three week, here's Fandral.  Of the trio, he probably has the least backstory, so I was kind of at a loss as to what to even say in his bio outside of "yup he's Fandral alright."  So I decided to come up with a story of him being a commoner with some confidence issues baked into it, and worked in his mother who appeared in the comics like... one time, thirty years ago.  The quest to restore the Odinsword that got the three named the Warriors Three is something from the comics, if you're wondering.

Like Volstagg, Fandral is not actually a character from Norse mythology, he's really just an Errol Flynn copycat.  So it was trickier than I anticipated to take that and translate to my established "sci-fi Viking warrior" look I have for my Asgardians, but I think I made it work.  Like with most of my Asgardians, he wears a mask--you'd think a guy who is known for his looks would keep it off, but it's maybe a status thing in Asgardian society or something?  I dunno.  I made his mask kind of bird like, with some gold projections to the side that kind of evoke his traditional curly mustache.  He's also got some long and flowing hair here too.

Tune in tomorrow for the last update of our special Warriors Three week: Hogun!
