I think it depends on what you wanna do.. I personally love macro photos so I choosed the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, because it has a Super-Macro-Focus .. (but this photo is taken with the Canon PowerShot A720 IS)
I think the SX20 IS is a great camera, but I just have experiences with Canon (not Nikon and so on .. ) so I think I'm not very expert, sry xD
I think for taking great photos you don't need a special camera..
