No Photoshop? Use Gimp! Or Paint.NET if you are on Windows and can't stand Gimp.
I like the contrast with the nearly colorless creature and the rich, warm background.

You don't know Gimp , the GNU Image Manipulation Program?
Enthusiasts say it is an image editing program as good as Photoshop. I won't go there, but I think it is more than enough for most base functions. Works on Linux, Windows, and Mac. And free!
It might get a while to be used to it, if you come from Photoshop (different logic) but once you overcome this phase, it is powerful and nice.
