Description This is something I made for a project from earlier in the year and I made a mini walkthrough to go with it. It was fun to make and was part of a series of 4 illustrations which I will upload soon. You'll need a tablet of some kind to do this, unless you're one of the weirdly skilled people who can digital paint with a mouse. This is my first time doing a walkthrough but I hope this helps and please let me know if you give it a go!
______

Step 1 • I often start with a soft brush as I feel this helps me to focus more on shape and composition first, rather than details. I usually neaten/harden the edges of my subject later on. In this step I also look at colour and shadows.

Step 2 • This step isn't to dissimilar to the previous but I've hardened my brush and I'm shaping up the mushroom a bit more, but still not focusing too much on detail yet.

Step 3 • In this step I've hardened the brush I'm using quite a bit (almost completely) and I'm really going in with details. It's good to look at reference at this point. I've also taken a medium strength eraser and have cleaned the blurry edges I got from using the soft brush, helping to define it more (since real mushrooms aren't naturally blurry ) This is where you can have fun and spend time on it, I like spending time on the underneath of the mushroom because I've always found that part weird and fascinating haha

Step 4 • I've not done much more drastic changes in the step compared to step 3 except working with the highlights. Since this was a part of a fantasy style series the mushrooms were glowing in the world I came up with. This was pretty easy to do and you can mess around with different colours that you like. Simply work with a soft brush and choose a very pale colour, for this I used blues and white. Paint over your mushroom and start playing with blending modes and opacity until you think it looks good! If you want more detailed highlights on the mushroom just harden your brush and work along the edges wherever you decide the light would be hitting it.

Step 5 • Inspired by Avatar I wanted the mushroom to have a few "vine" type tentacles, as if it was feeling for insects, etc. Work with a small/thin brush and start painting floaty-esque vines. It's also important to keep in mind the direction of these vines, if it were real the breeze would blow them into the same general direction. I made mine white but feel free to use any colour you like!

Step 6 • Here I'm working with different colours to add dimension and warmer highlights. I used a yellow/green colour just along the side. This can be subtle and wont be as noticable later on.

Step 7 • We're coming up for the finish and these parts are mainly finishing touches. I shrank this mushroom down in my final illustration so all of these details are mostly hard to see, so it's intirely up to you how far you take it. At the time I wasn't sure how large it was going to be. Here I just used a celestial texture so it makes a type of partical effect, like the mushroom was emitting spores.

Step 8 • Here I just added strands of grass by using a small thin brush, this was to make it easier for the mushroom to blend in with the surroundings and I can just drop in into place.

Step 9 • This last step I added a final glow by using a pale blue/white blurred circle ontop of it and changing the blending mode. This isn't necessary but I wanted the mushroom to really glow and look ethereal.

Thanks so much for your help, can you make a video or step by step for glowing stuff or something?
