Description This owl is rather atypical for an owl. He's only as long as a robin (though wider and with much larger wings), hunts by day is extremely aggressive and will even eat small birds. I was extremely lucky to get one frame of him banking. This is cropped a bit more than I normally would, but it's a shot I wouldn't want to pass up.

This is a great capture, I love the hawk owls! It's encouraging to know that they are aggressive and quick enough to take small birds !

I have added it to the favourites over at #FlockingOwls , a club devoted to these great raptors

I can see why, particularly when you first look at the image and think he is high in the sky and then on closer inspection he is near the floor.

Lucky...but certainly skilled I'd say. Perfect bird, perfectly captured.

Lovely exposure on the owl, and great detail throughout. The dark blue of the owl's shadow is a little distracting, though.

Fantastic shot.
A lot of owls can be seen hunting during the day, although most are crepuscular hunters. Only a small percentage of owls are truly nocturnal.

Good point. I believe this guy hunts only by day, and probably not near dusk/dawn.

Yes this is definitely a day hunter, it is such a stunning bird, and this photo certainly does it justice.

your exposure is right on mate.
Great action shot how much of a crop did you make, would seem hard keeping his wings in the frame .

I basically took the horizontal shot and cropped out the vertical from it.
