Haven had seen mermaids before, swimming off the coast of Miland, even spoken to them. None of them had approached her like this before, though.

"My name is Lazuli," the mermaid said. "I heard you talk to those other human girls about pearls. Where are they?"

"We were just talking," Haven protested. "I don't actually have any, I just heard there used to be pearl divers in the area, only they all ... had to leave. Oh."

"I don't believe you," Lazuli said, still smiling. "Not yet. I'm going to make sure."

She dove under, and Haven wondered what the mermaid had meant.
...
Then she found out, and she tried to call for the life guard. Under the surface, Lazuli chuckled as she continued to tickle Haven's bare feet.
