In our country, our ancestors used to have babaylans (shamans) that are given as roles for women. However, there are some documented cases where men (sometimes referred to as asog) took up the role as babaylans. These male babaylans are effeminate and they often have men as their romantic and sexual partners. This practice is one of the earliest record of homosexuality in my country, the Philippines
