Well.. I think there can be a lot of reasons) I didn't ask him. But I can imagine, that he is seeing of the ship, going somewhere and nobody knows, what can happen to it. And moreover he is too old to go on this ship and be with his friends. Or maybe there's his son (or even two) on it. Or his daughter is leaving whith her future husband to live far away across the sea.. I really don't know) These characters live their own life.
