I try to do greyscale first usually, to get more clear idea of the values. Then I just make a lot of gradual color shifts, and use softer/more "natural" brushes where the color should be more blended. I kinda "cheat" a lot using the color dropper on the ref to see how just dark/light to go and what hue to use. And I use mostly "oil" brushes for portraits like this, especially when I want them to look more like actual paintings.
