I don't find the picture serene or calm at all. There's too much energy held in suspense. It has the feeling of a photograph of a lit fuse.
It's very close, but I think I prefer this to the color photo because b&w just automatically captures depth and shadow better than color. It is an art form in itself to do color balance properly in color photography.

Very calm image. I like the use of the f/ground object (a fan?). Strong, clean b/w tones. Nicely done.
