Description On Saturday March 14 I attended day two of the Avalon airshow public display. Despite some poor weather conditions at the beginning of the show, the displays and performances were everything I expected from this spectacular event. I again share these pictures with you to express my passion for aircraft and the military.

This is the last image from Avalon, 2009. I showed you what MIGHT be our future in the F-35. This is what we know WILL be the future. This aircraft is the Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet, flying under USAF colours. The RAAF has ordered 24 of these aircraft to replace our aging F-111s at the end of 2010.

This is probably the loudest of the fast jets on show at Avalon and one of the most impressive in the skies. Whether it's streaking through the air at almost the speed of sound, performing a minimum-radius full circle turn or if it's slowly egressing at a very slow speed with its nose up and burners on, this plane absolutely stunned the crowd. We cannot wait for things to come. Avalon marked the final airshow appearance of the F-111... but this superjet gave us all something to truly look forward to.

That's my Avalon report! Two years from now... who knows what we might see?

Good thing that we're getting the F/A-18 Super Hornet after all. Kevin Rudd was setting his sights a little too high when he tried to go for the F-22...or was it the JSF? Well I forget now...either way for a day that had poor weather conditions, the Super Hornet looks like it's dressed for the occasion

Ruddy and Howard were always keen on the JSF. No chance of us getting F-22s.

I knew it was one of the two and I can understand why the F-22 would be off limits. But I hope they keep the F/A-18 long enough for the pilots to become seasoned in their use, as you and I both know, parliament has a tendency to jump the gun and overlook these things.

Right now the F-22A has a design flaw with its life support system. The Raptor is like a BMW- high maintenance and high performance with an even higher price tag. Given the current economic circumstances I don't think allied nations of the US can afford the asking price of $US 350 Million per aircraft.

Add to this the fact that the Raptor is a low observable or "stealth" aircraft, and the US wants to lord it over the rest of the world...however, once you get the Raptor in a close quarters fight it's like most other aircraft unless the pilot can do things with the Raptor only the Russians have seen...

The super Hornet's great. We just have the regular Hornets right now, but supposedly we'll be getting Lightning 2s in the future.

Super Hornets will be like an interim replacement til the Lightnings get their act together.

In that case they'll be around for a while.

Yeah, probably. Good thing the Super Hornet stole the show then

Ahh, the still-in-use carrier-capable jet. It is still good, but the FA-35 will take over some day.
