Description This is the finished product of the leather skull purse. I will be making red ones as well, but this is the first finished out one so I thought I would take a few shots and post it.
All formed leather with a resin backing for durability. Other than the obvious chain handles and rivets etc.
It has a fair amount of room, but I really dont know much about purses and really intended this as a work of art.

As a skull art fan, I have to say this piece is awesome!

There are a lot of skull pieces around, the mostly are just simple, have not too much efforts behind them or simply not creative enough, this is absolutely not the case. It's not only how detailed and good looking but also the technique behind it, the piece shows great skills working with leather and great attention to the details by the artist. Due I'm a male person, I don't carry purses at all but it doesn't mean I cannot appreciate the work behind it and its beauty.

I really enjoy watching this piece of art, thanks for creating it.

These are absolutely the most amazing things in the way of a purse I have ever seen! I belong to a hearse group and the gals in this group would go crazy over your work! (Actually, the men would, too!) Fan-fricking-tastic! I need one of these to sit in my lap on a hearse cruise.

Thank you. I do make and sell them though they are a bit pricey due to the time involved. My email address is on my profile page if you are interested.
Thanks again.

Amazing. May I ask what thickness/ounce leather you used?

I used 2/3 oz, just like the plague doctor masks. And yes, its very stiff and holds its shape after the process.

Ah, thank you very much for the information. One more question, was a real skull used under the leather, or a cast of a skull? I would love to try this on animal skulls, but I'm afraid the bone itself could be too brittle to withstand the task of molding the leather. Outstanding job!

No, the skull I used is not true size, and I bought it at a thrift store for $4. But it took quite a bit of work to prepair it for the process. It was far to frail so it had to be re enforced, and material added to the outside and some removed to get the personality I wanted. I basicly used a raw form to make my own design.
Word of advice. I was going to purchase a commercial medical reproduction but my Atty advised against it. Seems some of the companies copyrite the their skulls, so that would have placed me in a position to be sued. Eventhough I use them as a base and sculpt onto them its a hassle I did not want.
Real skulls are not very strong so I would advise against it unless you have worked with fiberglass to enforce the skull.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions. I had thought to use replica, or resin cast animal skulls, but did not take into consideration possible copyrights. Thank you again for your time.

Beautiful work, as you always do. I looked at the pics on your Etsy page to see what it looks like open...I don't know anything about purses either, but I'd suggest adding folding gussets inside so there is a way to contain everything as the purse opens.

thank you, and I agree. They need side gussets. The next ones will have them. And by the way. That rocket pack you made is really cool. I added it to my favorites. Like to see some other shots of it.

That is awesome! I absolutely love it, I can't wait to see it in red.
I have a question though? Did you give it an inner lining? If you're thinking about selling them as real purses that might be a good idea.

GriffinLeather In reply to InkyDinkyWho [2011-11-23 18:02:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yes they have a liner. I used a heavy felt. It was the only cloth type material I could use that keeps a reasonable shape.
I do have this one listed on etsy [link]

Oh Felt is good, keep anything like phones or ipods from getting scratched up.
And I'm looking at your shop right now. haha Love your work.

Thanks. Looking forward to making other shapes. I think a full sizes leather skull mask would be cool.
