This feels a bit too strawmanny to me At least with someone like Plebcomics, she bases her comics off of the actual sayings of real SJW's (Example: plebcomics.tumblr.com/post/942… plebcomics.tumblr.com/post/933… ) Even if they are somewhat exaggerated.

Here's what's going on...

There are Establishment Hipster Types who go out there and look for people to condemn so they can tell their friends about them on Facebook and be "Oh So Cool".  They look to condemn others to make themselves seem special, even though they are really boring people.

Now to go into a rant...
I was a fan of Robert Guillame from his Benson days, so I watched Sports Night when he was recruited into that cast of that show.  And then they had this idiotic episode "The Hungry and The Hunted", where Jeremy is forced to go on a hunting trip with this NFL Quarterback in the Canadian Wilderness.  Jeremy doesn't want to, but the network forces him to go.  Then later, after Jeremy gets back but ends up in the hospital where Isaac and Dana listen as he relates his experience on the trip.  This is from memory, but that's how much the following outraged me.  Jeremy tells the story of how the guide got this Quarterback to watch this waterhole, where a Buck, a doe, and a fawn all stop to drink from pond.  There the Quarterback, the guide, and another friend all line up the rifles and shoot down in Jeremy's words, "A Momma, A Baby, and A Daddy" which he ends with how just mean it was.

Speaking on this, really Sorkin?  You put a scene about people lining up their rifles to shoot down a whole deer family, where I am from it's illegal to shoot a doe unless it's the right time of year and there is over population of the deer that warrants it.  This is very rare.  And never when the Does are raising the fawns.  It's never legal to shoot a fawn!  The Jeremy character could have had a game warden pick up everyone in that hunting party to fine them.  It's in the state's best interest to keep the wildlife numbers up, so that in the future, other hunters will have something to hunt.  It's also why the Game Wardens patrol the waterways searching for illegal fishing.  The State Department of Parks and Wildlife stocks all those delicious fish you try to catch, it's in their interest to stop poachers and other unlicensed fishermen.  Just as it's in their best interest to keep hunters from killing the does when they are needed to keep up the deer population.  It's my anger over this one factually incorrect episode that kept me from ever watching any other Arin Sorkin show, that's right, I've never been able to sit down and watch one episode of The West Wing.

"And now for the Big Speech. Or to be more precise, Big Speeches, although only one of them announces itself in capitals, and that’s significant. After Jeremy gets back from the ill-begotten hunting trip which ends with him collapsed in the hospital, he tells the whole story to Isaac and Dana in rapid yet seemingly practiced detail, without being interrupted (Big Speech clichés no. 1 and no. 2). He’s genuinely wounded, and convincing in explaining why he didn’t object to the assignment even though he has a moral problem with hunting, but Sorkin does him no favors by ending the Big Speech with the unavoidably whiny “It was just mean!”"

Stabilization [2014-12-04 06:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Eh, my family usually doesn't like buying too much meat from the store. We get our own meat from moose hunting once a year and fishing during the summer, with some chicken, turkey(Thanksgiving), and beef thrown in there every once in a while.

We do it because it's cheaper, and we know that the animals haven't suffered in the end too much, unlike many farmed animals. Which is sad. But we still buy from them because we cannot obtain that meat elsewhere.

Eh. I think being a hunter usually is better than being a constant shopper of meats. Just a knowing that their lives were long, natural, and that their meat is uncorrupted (sometimes not, especially in fish) from toxins and antibiotics found in farmed food.

So yeah. I don't think that being an animal hunter is bad, as long as you do it for more for subsistence and not for sport. Plus if you go by limits set by the state you are in. Doesn't mean I don't like animals. I love so many, which is probably why I personally cannot bring it to myself to actually kill an animal, so everyone in my family does.

Bleh. Well, nice lil comic. Usually hear this crap about what is most ethical to eat, especially during Thanksgiving.

Excactly! I totally support hunting when it comes for feeding yourself of it and not just to get throphies. I used to fish a lot when I were younger, and we even had to fish our dinner one time when I were with my best friends grandparents up north. It was a valuable lesson xD we got as much food that day as we were able to get ourself. Not everyone has available easy food. And if I had to say, I think nuts/fruits and vegitables are a way more "pleasure" food tha meat is, since it cannot be made wherever.

Stabilization In reply to griffsnuff [2014-12-08 22:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! In Alaska here, substinence is super important, especially for the natives, since food prices are pretty high up since we're so far away from the main 48 states of the USA. Plus, back when I was in poverty, my great grandpa hunted deer and my great grandma made venison soups, stews, and all sprts of stuff like that for me and my brothers. We couldn't afford to buy meats, and mainly used food stamps, so it helped a lot.

The only trophies my family really keeps are the racks of some deer and moose, and even then, it's rare for us to take them.

And yes, nuts and fruits are a bigger pleasure food than ever. Heck, bananas are apparently inching close to extinction, along with cocoa beans. My family does buy fruits like that sometimes, but during the fall, we pick raspberries, strawberries, crowberries, blueberries, and salmonberries. Sometimes we are even able to pick crab apples, cran berries, and apples! (But our crab apple and apple trees went down in a big ol chinook, so that sucks) Back in Michigan, we did the same, but we picked strawberries, apples, and crab apples (less of a variety of fruits, more of a variety in vegetables).

I think it is pretty important to know the worth of substinence and be able to understand where your foods came from and all that. Once I graduate from school and move, I plan on continuing the farming and fishing. Maybe even join in during the autumnal moose hunt. And when I have children, I'll be sure they know how to do all of that, and how to be responsible shoppers and all. I don't know, I just think that it is a big element of life that tons of people miss out on, and even if I'm not in poverty, I want my children to know so they can at least experience it.

Yes!

xD I get the feeling that the only reasons people goa round yelling at others who eat meat, is that what the meat comes from is fluffy and cute. I bet 100$ the complaints would go down if all the proteins from meat came from insects instead and we ran around cooking insects alive. No one cares about them.

It's an animal rights and environmental health thing

FazedQueenBee In reply to golden1willow [2018-01-31 02:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Well okay then? Sorry I'm just a bit confused as to why a comment I made like 3-4 years ago about animal rights is being replied to now. But its not like killing to eat is illegal especially since turkeys and such are bred to become food rather then just killed out of nature. Farmers work, and spend money on feed/etc.

It would be a different story if farmers murdered their animals without the intent to eat/distribute for market for others to consume. 99% of the time animals like chicken/turkey/rabbits/etc are killed in a humain way and/or stunned before they are stripped of their meat/fur/etc.

Edit; Sorry if this came off as a bit aggressive, reading back now that was my intention of tone xD

golden1willow In reply to FazedQueenBee [2018-02-02 12:44:22 +0000 UTC]

lol, sorry about the timing ;=;
Actually, animal agriculture does do quite a bit of damage to the environment, especially trying to meet the demands of the current human population. And the way the economy works, buying meat and animal products creates demand and basically funds those industries, allowing them to grow as much as they do.
And many think that sentient animals being killed for food/products at all is unethical if it's not necessary (such as if you live in an isolate area). Especially if their living  conditions and execution aren't sound.

And just as a side note, many animals actually are killed without the intention of being eaten, such as male calf in the dairy industry and male chicks in the chicken industry.... though I think the calfs are eaten as veal.

Thats all I see on my facebook page anymore. I totally support animals rights and I hate abusers and factory farms, but I DO hunt to put food on the table for my family and to spend time in beautiful country. I think people take hunters the wrong way...but thats understandable because theres always irresponsible idiots out there who give hunters a bad name. Just understand that not all hunters are "stone cold killers that only kill animals for trophies"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

griffsnuff In reply to isabel251 [2014-12-01 23:29:46 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! there are idiots in all groups so dont worry! there are good hunters, and I support all when it comes to hunting for food. You have a lot of food the table for a really long time if you hunt big animals.

And what is funny is that most the people I have met who are against "hunting" doesnt ever care about fishing. Like hurrdurr fish dont have fur or are cute, who cares about fish. And yet dragged onto land to be choked is way worse than a bullet to the head killing you instantly.

ANd then again not all parts of our contry have supermarkeds or stores to buy food. No body cares about those people apparently xD

isabel251 In reply to griffsnuff [2014-12-02 01:39:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Big commercial fishing industries are just as bad as "farming" ones (they don't actually "farm" the animals).

I also fish and I know they are just as important and intelligent and have as much feelings as any other animal that is harvested for food. And wild caught salmon and steelhead is WAY better that "farm raised" ones.

And yes, we do also eat beef. BUT we get it from my grandparents who raise them in a wide open pasture and feed them only hay and oats. Not cow blood and drugs and steroids.

The ones who disgust me the most are those who impose their vegan lifestyle on their clearly carnivorous / omnivorous cats and dogs....It's ironic how people who claim to love animals so much are willing to malnourish and sicken their pets in order to feel good about themselves.

well, if anyone actually looked into the subject they would know they are actually supporting the torture of animals.
BUTTT.
No one does, they just criticize vegans for "Trying to force their way of life on you"
When in fact the result of eating meat equals you forcing your beliefs on another animal that doesn't get a say in whether or not they want to be eaten.
And for no reason as well, clearly people can live off of a vegan diet.... Eating animals is just a pleasure thing. like rape. except its okay because its an animal.

While for animals that hunt in the wild they do it for survival, not like us who kill like this: www.adaptt.org/killcounter.htm…

In that case I do support it. He has to eat to live. The meat industry at least needs a reform, for people who need it to survive. Most people do not.
If you ever want to know about it, however, I strongly suggest starting at the documentary "earthlings"

And you do realise not all people have acsess to a store with all kinds of products that replaces the life important thing known as proteins?

So no, meat is not just a pleasure thing. Meat is sometimes the only thing someone have to survive. Not everyone in this world even have internett. As someone who is on a lowcarb diet. Meat is vital for me to be healthy. I am not going to go around hungry because some angry person out there think that eating an animal is the same as going out and killing it for fun.

it is easy however to think the world is the same were you live and judge everyone else who think different than yourself. That however is a very closeminded way to live.
