Description Here's a practice page for '5 Finger Discount'. I work pretty fast when the ideas are flowing nicely, but this still took longer than it should've. (I need to work more efficiently, I think.) I normally don't post step-by-step stuff, but it looked cool. Perfect justification. The brown and red tones I'm going to use for the basic pages, but I might try a heavily shadowed, toned look for splash pages. There's an amusing little sample in the corner that ate up an hour of my life.

If you're wondering, the feline fellow that Emile's talking to is Leopold Katowski, aka Leo, Thierry's old partner in solving crimes. Leo was Thierry's best friend, and was almost as upset as Emile when Thierry died. Leo kept a weather eye on Emile after the passing of his uncle, knowing that the Cadavre family wasn't exactly the best at raising emotionally healthy children. When Emile graduated near the very top of his class and landed a prestigious position in the Department of Stealth and Sneaking, only to be dishonorably discharged weeks later, Leo knew that there'd be trouble. When Emile disappeared from Figment City only to reappear a few years later in the European underground, Leo was upset more for Thierry's sake than his own. The cute little kid he'd once known had transformed in into a fiendishly clever thief, the bane of his department's existence. Leo's had a couple of opportunities to go after Emile himself, but he's never been able to work up the guts to slap a pair of cuffs on him. Instead, they usually end up having delightful little conversations like the one pictured above. Leo and Emile are friends...in a sense...but it's a really odd relationship, especially since Leo should be dragging Emile off to jail and Emile should be escaping out a window. Leo would be in his late forties, early fifties here. He's supposed to have a weatherbeaten, gruff sort of look, so I based him off of this stray manx that hangs around my neighborhood. Emile is in his early/mid thirties. Something like that. Two decades of being a jerk takes it's toll. haha

This is right in the middle of a conversation, but you get the idea. Emile isn't in town too much, so Leo's filling him in on all of the lovely things he's been missing.

hahahaha SEXCELLENT DIM! And is it just me or does Emile have a certain current David Bowie look to him?

Now I'm compelled to draw David Bowie.

Damn you, Jack.

Yay for step-by-step pictures!

I am in awe of your colouring, I really am. It always comes out looking so neat and crisp all the time. And the colouring on tiny Emile is just brilliant - especially the texture on his coat.

Haha, here's some proof of Emile's verbal wit.
I just LOVE the little Emile-pic in the left corner! Is the left one a pencil sketch? Or is it just supposed to look like one.

Nope, not a pencil sketch. I tried out a new coloring technique.

Is tiny Emile colored traditionally, or digitally? Because the textures on him look so realistic... quite natural looking. If it is digital, I think you have the perfect texture filter going for you.

As for the comic itself... wow. Let me tell you, this looks fine the way it is. Certainly something I would buy. I think that this is a perfectly acceptable level of coloring detail to do an entire comic in. However, I know that you're trying to push yourself and whatnot, but anything MORE detailed than this would take such an obscene amount of time to complete; after all, that's why comics of this caliber will often have an inker AND a colorist!

I wouldn't get discouraged at how long this is taking. You're trying to do two extremely time consuming jobs by yourself, so that's a big pat on the back, if you ask me. I'd keep it the way it is.

Tiny Emile is digitally colored, but it took a buttload of time. Way more than I'd be willing to spend under normal circumstances. I laid down a canvas filter set on the lowest level and put a ton of painted layers over it. This is an experiment I will not repeat until I figure out something more efficient.

haha, I /wish/ this was good enough. The backgrounds are...ah...a bit too impressionistic, I think.

True, I suppose, although I guess it's a matter of personal preference (with your preference being the most important, of course, seeing as how it's your comic).

For instance. I tend to like the simple (in a good way) backgrounds. The real focus, to me, is the characters and their expressions. I think that's nice.

However, I do know what you're saying. When you come up with this vast imaginary world, you just want to convey every little bit of it to the viewer, even something as simple as a wall or table. I know the feeling!

Absolutely incrediable. I'm curious, do you write a storyline first before you do the comic strip.

Oh, most definitely. I usually write out a quick scene narrative style and lay down a sketch.

Writing out scenarios always give me trouble, especially when you're trying to work out a satisfactory conclusion to a story.

Nice colors and lineart girl! Only thing that could possibly bug me is the placement of the word balloons. I had to read over some balloons twice in the first and second panel. You gotta keep in mind where the viewer's eye goes in a comic sometimes, but even I have troubles with that in my comics.

But other than that, this practice you're doing looks very promising.

Damn but you do manage to get your lineart clean and crisp. The monochrome coloring is nice, too!

I like Leo's whiskery moustache thing.

I notice Emile's French accent doesn't seem to show up in this comic, are you getting rid of it?
Also, I love the color scheme, reminds me of antique photograph. Will you be using different color schemes for different chapters?

Leo certainley does look worn and weatherbeaten, it seems he and MEile will have quite the interesting relationship...

He does have an accent, but it really only shows up when he's irritated/angry/scared. His English is supposed to be almost flawless (Unlike Paolo's English...which is a joke.)
